Whether you’re always out or always in…

You need locks. We can attest to that, being the outdoorsy people that we are.

So when we decided to install them, we tried different brands and products to find exactly what would appease our worries.

We tested each lock by measuring them, throwing them down and pounding on them, then installing them and trying to break into our own homes. And we didn’t just try them on sliding windows. We also tested them on sliding glass doors.

Bottom Line: No burglar can break in with this super-secure and sturdy double lock from Maxdot.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

To use this lock, your window track height should be at least 1.5 cm, and the thickness is at most 1.6 cm. This product can’t accommodate beyond those numbers.

So lucky you if your window tracks are of the above-mentioned size!

Overall…

This lock’s quality exceeds other brands of the same price. It’s even better than some of the more expensive ones.

Once installed properly on your window frame – a very easy thing to do – it’s going to hold tight. The screws won’t loosen up as other locks do. And the keys are well-made too.

Both the lock itself and the key won’t rust quickly even when exposed to rain and sunlight. That’s our Editor’s Choice for you!

Moreover…

You’ll have four of these locks for a very affordable price.

We think that one lock is enough for the sliding windows. But for sliding doors, you might want to put two because they’re heavier.

But if you want to use more, why not? After all, you can’t compromise on home security.

Bottom Line: The U-9819 from Prime-Line proves that a high-quality secondary window lock doesn’t have to be expensive.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

Even at first glance, you can see that this lock is durable. The material used for it is surprisingly high-quality, considering how cheap it is.

It won our Best Value award not because it’s the least expensive of all the locks we’ve tried. But it exceeded our expectations and even impressed us more than others.

Why so?

It’s a well-made lock in terms of cut and design.

We ordered a bunch of them and received locks of consistent sizes. The keys all fit properly too. However, you need to make sure that your window tracks are at most ⅛ of an inch thick.

But most importantly, we tried prying our sliding windows open and found that this lock would hold tight.

At first…

We thought that it could damage the window track.

But to install it properly, you’ll have to puncture your window frame – like fixed window locks. If you don’t mind doing that, then you won’t have any complaints at all.

And don’t worry about rain and shine because this lock won’t rust easily.

Ease to Install

9

Durability

10

Size & Fit

9

Bottom Line: This sliding door lock will keep your kids safe without hurting them.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

We didn’t realize how affordable this product was until we found ten high quality locks in the package.

But that’s not why it’s our Top Pick.

Why, indeed?

Since the screws have a vinyl lining, it’s safe for both the window track and the kids. It won’t damage anything or anyone while it provides a better grip on your frame.

So, even though it creates a bit of noise when in use, it’s a small price to pay.

Another thing we noticed was the inconsistency with the size. Generally, these locks would fit a 3/16-inch window track – even a ⅜-inch one if you don’t put the window seal in. But some locks are smaller than others.

However…

We didn’t mind it that much. As long as it secures your sliding window, all you’ll ever notice is its durability and sturdiness.

This aluminum lock is rust-resistant, even after exposure to window condensation and other elements. So overall, this lock is a steal!

4 - Best Adjustable Window Security Lock

9

Ease to Install

8

Durability

9

Size & Fit

10

Bottom Line: This adjustable lock will surely fit your window, no matter the size and thickness.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

We’re assuming we all know that not all windows are the same. Some have thick frames and tracks, while others have thin ones.

With this ALLWIN lock, that’s not a problem at all!

ALLWIN locks are adjustable.

You can use it on 0.39 to 2.36-inch sliding window tracks. So even if you’re unsure about your track size, no worries! This lock has got you covered.

And it’s even strong enough to secure sliding doors. It won’t rust, bend, or break easily. There are inconsistencies, though. If you compare the keys from the locks, you’ll find them less durable.

But in terms of securing the windows closed – or slightly ajar – there are no issues.

Moreover…

Its posh design makes it look classy. It would go with a minimalist and modern interior.

You’ll just need to double or triple-check that it’s installed properly. One of my friends complained that their kid could pry one out when they weren’t looking.

But once you get around that, this affordable lock will serve you well!

5 - Best Durable Window Security Lock

1 X Lot of 4 Pcs Sliding Window Lock

Strength & Performance

9

Ease to Install

9

Durability

9

Size & Fit

8

Bottom Line: Burglars will give up on your sliding windows with this durable lock from Momentum Brands.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

Compared to other locks in the same price range, this isn’t the toughest and strongest one. But still, it’s a durable product that can keep you worry-free at night.

Once installed…

This lock won’t budge. It’s durable enough to hold both vertical and horizontal sliding windows. Plus, it has a tight grip.

It also helps that the lock is easily installed. It’s no rocket science, and if you have kids, they’d have the hardest time taking these locks out.

Although…

There are a few inconsistencies about the size. There are 12 locks in one pack, and sadly, some are smaller than the others.

It was a bummer because, in the first place, you could only use these locks with thin tracks. Now, we had a bunch of even smaller locks. We could’ve locked patio doors with them because they’re strong enough. But none of them fit.

Still, it’s a great buy.

This is a very affordable deal, and it did what locks are supposed to do. Moreover, it’s not going to rust in a long time.

6 - Best Material Window Security Lock

Window Locks, 4 Sets Premium Sliding Window Locks Security

Strength & Performance

9

Ease to Install

8

Durability

9

Size & Fit

9

Bottom Line: You can’t go wrong with a sliding window lock made of high-quality aluminum alloy.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

There’s a lot to love about this lock.

There’s the plastic gasket that keeps the screws from causing damage to the tracks. And the gasket helps keep the grip tight.

It’s also big enough to fit at least a 0.6-inch high and at the most 0.63-inch thick track. However, you can’t use it at the middle track because it’s a keyed lock.

Speaking of the keys…

This particular product uses a hex key, something that looks classy and isn’t too common. So that adds a little bit of security, knowing that there’s less chance that a burglar has another hex key to turn your lock.

And it’s very durable too. Not just the key but the whole lock. It’s made of high-quality, durable aluminum alloy, after all.

So it’s both strong and rust-resistant and will surely last long.

Only…

Be careful with the installation. Make sure to double or triple check it because the screws loosen up when not properly placed.

But once you get the hang of it, your sliding windows will have nothing to complain about.

7 - Best Window Security Lock For Family Protection

Reliancer 4 Pack Sliding Window Locks Sets

Strength & Performance

9

Ease to Install

8

Durability

9

Size & Fit

8

Bottom Line: Let your whole household sleep better with these durable Reliancer locks keeping you safe.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

We had high expectations from this lock because it’s a bit more expensive than others that impressed us. And we weren’t disappointed!

First…

Right off the package, these locks don’t look cheap at all. They even look more expensive than the actual price. It’s probably because of the smooth finish.

But it’s not all about the looks.

These locks are as strong as they look. Once we were able to install it properly, they didn’t budge at all. And we even let the little ones try to pry it out of place, but it didn’t move.

However…

It’s a bit difficult to fit the locks. They’re big, which is an advantage. And adjustable too. They can accommodate at least 0.48-inch high and at most 0.63-inch thick tracks.

The downside is that they loosen up when used with a thin and small window and door tracks.

But once you get the right lock placing…

You can worry less because it grips firmly and tightly. And it won’t rust that easily even when exposed to the elements.

It’s a plus too that the keys are unique.

8 - Best Easy Install Window Security Lock

Boao Set of 15 Siding Window Locks Door Locks

Strength & Performance

8

Ease to Install

9

Durability

8

Size & Fit

8

Bottom Line: These Boao window locks made securing your sliding window easy and affordable.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

We found another super affordable yet good quality product. Boao will give you 15 durable and rust-resistant locks in one cheap package.

But the best thing about it…

Is that it’s so easy to install. It’s a no-brainer at all. You won’t need to use any tool except for the keys, and you’ll probably get it on the first try – we did. We think that it’s because it’s a small lock, so it grips tightly.

But the size can be a disadvantage too. You can’t use this lock if your tracks are thicker than 6mm or 0.23 inches. That’s too small for our taste.

Not to mention…

We were looking forward to installing these locks on our sliding windows. They’re slightly weaker than other products we tried, but they’re durable enough.

They still didn’t budge when we tested them. And they even proved to be safe for the tracks. There were no damages or punctures, even with our vinyl windows.

So we still recommend this lock for keeping your window at your desired opening.

9 - Best Window Security Lock For Horizontal & Vertical Windows

PRIME-LINE F 2588 Sash Lock

Strength & Performance

8

Ease to Install

7

Durability

8

Size & Fit

9

Bottom Line: This lock from Prime-Line Products is the best treat for your double-hung window.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

This lock isn’t the break-the-bank kind of expensive, but it costs more than most on this list. But for the best reasons, anyway.

It’s a fixed lock, so prepare to take out your tools. You’ll need some experience with screws and screwdrivers to install this lock properly.

But once that’s out of the way…

You can stop worrying about keeping your window completely closed. Don’t worry if your windows are wood, vinyl, or aluminum-framed. This lock won’t cause damage to anything.

Also, unlike track locks, this sash or latch lock isn’t just for sliding windows or doors. Prime Line’s F2588 will keep any type of window closed.

And it will hold strong enough.

When we tested the lock, it didn’t budge nor break. But after a few weeks, we noticed a bit of rust. And the screws loosened up because they were too small (the holes weren’t big enough.)

If you’re alright with replacing the screws every so often, then this lock is for you. It’s sturdy, generally strong and tough, and worth your money.

10 - Best Smooth Finish Window Security Lock

JEACENT A/C Security Window Lock Bar

Strength & Performance

8

Ease to Install

7

Durability

9

Size & Fit

8

Bottom Line: This window lock would complete your interior design with its smooth and long-lasting finish.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

As far as window wedge locks go, this one from Jaecent is strong and tight. It’s made of steel that doesn’t rust, bend, or break easily.

We didn’t expect less since it’s one expensive lock.

Besides that…

It took us a moment to install the lock. Good thing it comes with instructions. But still, it’s not as easy as track locks or the likes.

And it’s about an inch thick. That means your track should be just as wide as that.

But once it’s installed…

This lock performs well enough.

It didn’t budge when we tried burglary on our own house, and since it’s a little different than our other locks, the kids didn’t even bother guessing how to untangle it.

It’s also a plus that it’s adjustable, so it would fit 10 to 17.5 inches window lengths.

And the best thing…

Is that it looks minimalistic and modern. It would go well with modern house interiors. Since the coating prevents rust, too, it’s both pretty and functional.

  • Keyed locks – as the name suggests, these locks need keys.
  • Hinged wedge locks – used with double-hung windows, they prevent the glass panels from opening fully.
  • Swivel action locks – makes use of a self-locking snib or a catch to secure the window.
  • Window latches – usually used with single and double-hung windows, these locks make use of lever-like latches to lock the windows open or closed.
  • Bar lock – often attached with a chain, the pin goes through one window sash to another to lock it close.
  • Smart locks – electronic devices that use motion sensors, codes, and alarms to keep the house secure.

Features to look out for:

  • The best locks are not just durable but also corrosion-resistant.

  • Most vinyl windows have 1/16-inch to ½-inch frames.
  • Locks that easily rust will damage your sliding doors or windows too.

Jargon buster:

Window Locks Top Tips:

  • If you have a casement window, use two locks (one on each side) for better security.
