Introduction

Choosing a recreational vehicle can be a daunting task; after all, this is going to be your home for quite a while, whether you’re traveling long-distance or keeping yourself safe and hidden from the chaos of the world.

And that’s why we’re here to help you through this guide.

There are several things you have to consider first before buying an RV. First off, the size of your family. Obviously, if you have a big family, then bigger RVs are the best choice. The interior height of the RV should also be a consideration. There should be enough headroom for you and your family, especially if you have a tall member.

Another thing you should consider is weather. If you’re going to a snowy place, an RV with insulated walls are great. If you’re traveling in the summer, better opt for one that has lots of ventilation windows.

Those are just some examples.

Thankfully, there are a wide variety of RVs to suit different needs, which we will cover later in this article.

For now, here are the 10 best survival RVs available today.

SUMMARY:

For anyone who doesn’t want to forgo luxury even in a survival scenario, the Mercedes Benz Zetros 6×6 Custom Camper is perfect for you.

Designed to be used in extreme conditions such as outdoor expeditions, military operations, and disaster relief operations, you can be assured that this heavy-duty recreational vehicle can handle harsh weather conditions such as snow and blizzards, and every kind of terrain you could think of.

With its all-wheel-drive capabilities and six all-terrain tires, it enables you to gain great traction even on rough or slippery roads. This RV is powered by a 7.2-liter six-cylinder in-line engine, which results in 326 horsepower.

The exterior paint job allows you to blend in with a snowy surrounding if you find yourself in a situation where you don’t want to draw unwanted attention.

Don’t be fooled by its tough-looking exterior— inside, you’ll find a luxuriously furnished, fully insulated interior with a heated marble floor— it’s definitely one of the most luxurious RVs we’ve come across.

Need to cook? No problem; the stylish kitchen area got you covered— it has a sink, a microwave oven, a coffee maker, a grill, a refrigerator and freezer, and is well illuminated with LED lights so that you won’t get into an accident while cooking.

There’s also a master bedroom, a marble bathroom, a six-person leather seat, and a padded sleeping bunk bed for the driver. Other things included inside are a backup camera, a 46-inch TV, and an intuitive 7-inch touchscreen.

Moreover…

A special air conditioning system, built-in WiFi, Bluetooth connectivity, a DVD/CD player, an MP3 player, and a top-notch BOSE sound system further enhance the experience of using this RV. Four 220-Ah batteries are charged automatically by a diesel generator, and two 80-watt solar panels that are mounted on the roof provide power.

In addition to those…

Our Editor’s Choice also comes with two spare tire and a quad bike that emerges from a ramp in the rear of the RV for hunting.

Here’s a kicker…

There’s no getting around it— all of this comes at a high cost. However, considering this RV’s incredible sturdiness, top-grade quality, and all the luxury and comfort it will provide you even in an extreme bug-out scenario, this expedition vehicle is absolutely worth buying or saving money for.

SUMMARY:

If you just want a high-quality but simple RV without all the frills that won’t break the bank, the Patriot Camper X1 is an easy choice.

This towable RV is so short and compact that it can be easily stored in your garage where you can have it packed and ready to go if the need arises.

Its body is constructed from monocoque aluminum, giving it awesome durability and ruggedness, while remaining lightweight.

Indeed, its off-road capability is its biggest strength; because of its light weight compared to other RVs, towing it is a breeze, no matter what kind of terrain you’re passing through.

Setting it up is a walk in the park as well. This RV can be set up in just less than ten minutes, including the kids’ room, which is just great during emergency situations and when you have to get away as quickly as you can.

Inside, there’s a living area and a king-size bed with a high-density mattress for a good night’s sleep; a good thing about this bed is that it can be folded up during the day to reveal plenty of storage space underneath.

Look up, and you’ll see a tropical roof over the top that keeps the temperature cool and provides great ventilation, LED lights, as well as a star-gazer roof, which you can unzip if you want to watch the stars at night.

Outside, there’s a 270-degree Patriot Campers Off-Road Awning with UPF50+ that provides protection for the cooking and dining areas for maximum comfort while cooking or eating.

Speaking of which…

Probably the biggest star of the RV is the galley area. The layout design of the L-shaped kitchen was created for functionality and for mimicking the cozy feel of your kitchen at home. Featuring scratch-proof stainless steel benches, you can prepare your family’s food while sitting comfortably.

The galley is well-designed and features a sink with both hot and cold water, plenty of storage drawer, including a slide-out pantry, which are perfect for storing a supply of food that will last you a long time, a BBQ swing-away platform, a twin-burner stove & grill, a fridge slide that can support up to 6-litre fridge, and compartments for plates and cutleries.

At the back of the camper trailer, you’ll find a rear tailgate that doubles as a dining table, solar panels, a front box for more storage, a pole and peg holders, and wet storage boxes for dirty clothes

This RV comes in three colors to choose from to suit your preference: white, green, and blue.

Now…

This RV may not have special luxury features like the first item on our list. But if you’re looking for a lightweight and compact travel trailers that cover all your basic necessities, and you don’t particularly care for more luxurious RVs, then our Best Value awardee should be perfect.

SUMMARY:

The Earthroamer XV-LTS Expedition Vehicle is an impressively well-designed RV that has well-thought-out details which are designed for maximum efficiency.

This RV is built on a four-wheel drive and Ford F-550 chassis. It’s powered by turbo-diesel and solar panels, so it’s perfect for people who wants a self-sufficient truck without needing a noisy generator.

The galley kitchen features a built-in sink with a separate drinking faucet for extra-filtered water for drinking, an induction cooktop, a fridge/freezer combo, a convection/microwave oven, and plenty of drawers for cutlery and pantry storage. There’s also a cabinet for your trash bin and cleaning equipment for better sanitation.

Located up above the galley are the cabinets for fragile utensils and dishes such as plates, bowls, mugs, and drinking glasses so that they’ll remain secured and won’t fly out even when you’re passing through rough terrain.

One of the cabinets is empty so that you could put whatever you want in there; meanwhile, the front cabinet houses the BOSE surround sound system, the DirecTV module for the satellite TV, the Blu-Ray player, the Apple TV, and the XM radio unit.

Underneath the cabinets is a relaxation or hang-out area with a sofa and a foldable table where you can eat or work. Giving you a great view outside is an all-composite acrylic window that is free of any metallic components to prevent condensation inside the RV.

What’s more…

This RV features a King-size bed with a gun safe and several built-in storage boxes on the side. A fan and roof hatch for stargazing can be found above and there’s additional storage space underneath the bed.

If you hate bringing too much luggage with you (and who doesn’t?), you’ll love the wardrobe unit of this truck. It includes 18-inch dovetail drawers and a full hanging closet with shelves below it.

Another cool feature is the wine rack and wine accessories drawer that are located between the drawers and the hanging closet, which is just one of the features that set it apart from other expedition vehicles.

Continuing the space-optimizing theme of this truck is the wet bathroom with its combined shower and toilet. It also has a 5-gallon cassette toilet.

This truck utilizes a diesel air heater and a diesel-fired coolant for water heating, which is great for winter. For security, it’s equipped with a surveillance system that includes cameras that are mounted on the front, sides, and rear of the RV.

As if those are not enough…

This RV is four-season-capable, so you can use this in any kind of weather with no problem at all.

A little warning…

The mattress that comes with the bed isn’t the softest, so we suggest that you bring your own.

SUMMARY:

If you prefer a smaller RV without compromising comfort and storage spaces, the Sportsmobile Classic 4×4 Camper Van is the real deal.

This RV is built on the Ford Cutaway Chassis and the body is constructed from steel-reinforced fiberglass.

Entering the van we couldn’t help but notice right away the large windows providing a stunning view of the outside. The windows are covered with a mesh screen, which you can take down for better ventilation during the summer.

At the front of the camper van, there’s a passenger seat that can be rotated. A curtain can be used to cover the windows for more privacy or if you just want to keep the lights out. Above, there are LED lights and an access to the roof rack. We love how much headroom this van has, which is good if you have a tall people in your group.

Going to the galley, you will find lots of storage including various drawers and cabinets, as well as a pantry storage with a mirror. There’s also a stainless-steel sink, an isotherm refrigerator, a microwave oven, and an awning-style window. By the way, all the windows in this RV have a day and night shade feature.

In the bedroom, there’s a couch that can be easily converted into a bed. Under the couch, there’s an access panel to the water pump. On the left of the converted bed, there’s a decent-sized closet and a hanging closet with a surprisingly large storage space down below it.

There are tracks on both sides of the bedroom, which you can use to hang extra storage pockets or hanging organizers if you want additional storage. There are storage pockets on the right where you can store things you want to access easily like your books or gadgets.

On top (literally) of all those…

This RV has an integrated penthouse top that blends seamlessly with the shell, resulting in a sleek look. To access it, simply push the top part of the bedroom. The penthouse top also features another bed and a window for a terrific view and ventilation.

Taking this RV on your off-road adventures, it’s inevitable that you will encounter extremely muddy places. For that reason, the carpet can be removed to be cleaned or vacuumed.

Another cool thing is…

This RV has swinging doors that come with little tables and small storage compartments behind them.

At the rear of the RV, the aluminized bumper carries a full-size spare tire carrier and a utility box that swings away. There are also secret storage compartments below the floor where you can store very important valuables.

However…

Because it’s on the smaller side, we don’t recommend this if you’re planning to bring a lot of family members.

Near the kitchen is the dry bathroom with a separate toilet (with a sink) and shower units. The water system includes a 230-L freshwater tank feeding the faucets through the Webasto water heater/boiler and a Biolit 97 water filter, which ensures safe and clean water for your loved ones.

If you’re planning to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, you won’t have to worry about the supply of power, as this RV utilizes a 320-Ah lithium-ion battery pack and a 240-watt solar charging system as reliable power sources.

Additionally…

You will also have the option to add an air conditioning system in the living room, an outside cabin, a flat-screen TV, and a roof rack for two bicycles, an outdoor set that includes a table and two chairs, and many more.

Keep in mind, though…

SUMMARY:

What is the result if you combine two legendary brands such as Winnebago and Mercedes-Benz in one RV? You get the Winnebago Revel 4×4, your new camping best friend.

Launched in 2017, this RV has seen a lot of upgrades since and it shows. It’s built on a 144-inch Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis and is powered by a 3-L, 6-cyl turbo-diesel engine, resulting in a torque of 325 ft. and a towing capacity of 5000 lbs. Adding versatility is the high/low range mode.

Providing access to the passenger side and the back are the screen doors with magnets for easy closure, while three Dometic windows with screens offer good ventilation and have insulated blinds for privacy during sleeping time.

The front of the van is designed with the comfort of the driver in mind. It features 360-degree swivel seats and RAM® Tough-Track™.

Meal prep has never been easier— the RV’s galley includes a stainless-steel countertop and sink with a fold-down faucet and cover, a single-burner induction cooktop for flameless cooking, an AC/DC 2.5-cubic foot refrigerator, and tons of kitchenware such as plates, bowls, silverware, a kettle, a chopping knife, a cutting board, coffee mugs, and lots more.

The all-in-one wet and gear closet have a cassette toilet, and a flexible showerhead. There’s also a dinette that features a pull-up table that you can convert into a bed if you need an extra sleeping platform, for instance, if you have an overnight guest.

The back of the RV features a loft Power Lift bed that can fit two people up to six feet and four inches in height. When the bed is not in use, it reveals a spacious rear garage below it that can hold things like bikes.

Outside the van is an electric awning with Bluetooth control, which offers protection from sun and elements and is great if it’s raining and you want to keep the water out without closing the van door. There are also an LED light and a fold-down exterior table for one of those nights where you just want to sit back and chill outside.

Even better…

This RV comes with a 200-watt solar power system, a diesel-powered heating, a 12V ceiling fan, built-in WiFi, a backup camera, a ladder, and a luggage rack.

We just wish the exterior awning had legs for more sturdiness and stability, especially on windy days, but overall, we’re definitely not complaining.

This RV is available in three colors: silver forest, pebble gray, and blue gray.

Well, this truck has two power sources: a 720Ah lithium-ion battery and a 1440-watt solar panels that are located on the roof.

SUMMARY:

Anyone who needs a simple truck that they can use to mount a camper shell on, the Iveco Daily 4 x 4 is a simple yet reliable truck that gets the job done.

This truck has a 3.5-ton towing capacity, a 2.5-ton payload, a 5000-kg load capacity, and a 255 mm ground clearance. It comes with a single cab or dual cab options.

Powering this truck is a 3-L, 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, which generates 180 horsepower and 430 Nm torque.

While it has always been known as a working truck, it still features quite a lot of technological features to give you an easier time on the road such as Bluetooth, Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay, a DAB radio, an inductive charger, air conditioning with automatic climate control, and an EcoSwitch PRO system.

Besides…

It has suspended heated seats that prevents shock when you encounter big bumps on your path. There’s also a Webasto independent heater, a tablet holder, and lots of storage compartments to store your valuables.

Admittedly…

We could still feel the bumps on the road despite the suspended seats. Still, the off-road capability of this truck is pretty hard to beat.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

The Adventurer 80RB Truck Camper is a lightweight and compact RV that looks deceptively small on the outside.

Stepping inside, you won’t feel that this RV measures only 15.10 x 90 x 96 inches because the light neutral colors and the wide windows create the illusion of a more spacious interior.

The kitchen area features a two-burner cooktop, a two-way refrigerator, a microwave oven, and a lot of storage drawers and cabinets. A 12-inch-deep sink with a faucet completes the little kitchen. The kitchen is surprisingly roomy, making it easy for us to prepare meals.

While the dinette is quite small, it does have some cool features that we love. One is the 360-degree swivel table. There’s also the Adventurer-exclusive roll-over sofa with cup holders in the armrests, which is perfect for movie nights. This sofa can be converted into a bed measuring 40 x 72 inches.

The compact wet bathroom includes a shower, a toilet, and a dome-shaped skylight above providing extra headroom for tall users as well as giving better ventilation. Separating the bathroom from the dinette are the shower curtain and the sliding door.

As for the sleeping space, this RV comes with a Queen-size bed with a mini closet and a drawer on one side and a shelf on the other, good for holding books for night readers.

This RV also comes with a 15-gallon freshwater tank, a 6-gallon gray water tank, and a 6-gallon black water tank. Stereo controls with speakers form the sound system of this RV. An awning outside keeps you and the RV protected from the weather and elements.

We love how aesthetically pleasing this RV is, both inside and out with its softly elegant interior and two-toned exterior design.

Of course, at its price point, you can’t expect a full-on luxurious RV with loads of devices, but this one offers all you will need for a comfortable experience. We wished the bathroom had a sink, but it’s not a deal-breaker for us.

Buyer's Guide:
How To Choose The Best Survival RV

What are the different types of survival RVs?

Recreational vehicles can be classified into two groups, depending on whether they’re powered by a motor or not: Motorhomes and towable RVs.

Motorhomes

Motorhomes, or motorized vehicles, are RVs that are powered by a motor. They have three types: Class A, Class B, and Class C.

  • Class A – Class A RVs characteristically have a flat or a little bit slanted windshield on the front, giving them a bus-like appearance. Their sizes range from 24 ft. to 45 ft. in length. They are usually powered by either a diesel engine or a gas engine.
  • Class B – Class B RVs typically have an appearance similar to a van. The sizes usually range from 17 ft. to 24 ft. long. Because they are built out in the inside, it’s common to call them a “camper van”.
  • Class C – While Class A RVs are the biggest and Class B RVs the smallest, Class C RVs are in the middle. Combining the usual physical characteristics of Class A RVs and Class B RVs, Class C RVs have a van or truck-like front and a box at the back of it. Their sizes approximately range from 20 to 30 ft. long.

Towable RVs

Towable RVs are RVs that can be towed behind a truck or other types of towing vehicle. They come in two varieties: Fifth wheels variety and the Bumper-pull variety.

Truck Campers

A Truck Camper is neither towable nor is it motorized. It’s a type of RV that sits in the bed of an ordinary pickup truck.

Features to look out for

Sturdy build

When worse comes to worst, you want an RV that won’t let you down— dependable, reliable, and on top of all, sturdy enough to withstand the toughest situations.

Basic amenities

Whether you’re going to use an RV for survival purposes or for long-time traveling, you won’t last a long time without basic amenities such as drinking water and electricity or any other power source, so make sure that the RV you choose comes equipped with them.

Storage compartments

No one wants to bring lots of suitcases onboard, so it’s important to select an RV with lots of storage compartments including drawers, boxes, and cabinets.

Survival RV Top Tips

  • Always be prepared and bring a toolkit
  • Don’t forget to check the batteries of your RV
  • Eating is crucial to survive, so make sure you’ll have the tools to do so. Some RVs come equipped with kitchenware, cookware, and utensils. Check which tools are included in your RV and which ones aren’t so that you’ll know what to buy; make sure you have the most essential ones. Oh, and make sure that the knives are very sharp— you might need it for more than just meal prep!
  • Invest in sun protection, such as window UV protectors or an awning, if your RV doesn’t come with one.
  • It’s not just the exterior measurements of an RV you should know about but also the interior height, especially if you have a tall person with you, so that you’ll know if the RV provides enough headroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1: Can you live permanently in an RV?

A - Yes, you technically can, as there are no laws prohibiting it as of the moment. However, you’ll have to keep in mind the pros and cons of this way of living and consider it well. For example, yes, you’ll see lots of places, but you also won’t have a permanent address, which could complicate things for you down the road.

Question 2: What are the most common problems with RVs?

A - A leaky roof, battery running out, and plumbing issues are just some of the most common RV problems. This shouldn’t discourage you from getting an RV, though, you just have to arm yourself with knowledge on how to deal with them.

Question 3: What are the safest RVs?

A - Any RV can be safe as long as it has safety features such as airbags and a brake controller. Still, it’s widely agreed upon that Class B motorhomes are the safest RVs, all else being equal. That’s because they typically have front airbags and stability control. They are also the most ideal type of RV for beginners as they are the easiest to maneuver.

And we’re finally here.

Getting an RV is indeed one of the best things you could do in terms of serious survival prepping.

If you’re still struggling to decide which RV to get, let us give you our top three recommendations.

The first one is our Editor’s Choice, the Mercedes Benz Zetros 6×6 Custom Camper. This RV is the perfect choice if you want a RV with an incredibly tough and rugged exterior and a luxurious interior that will make you feel as if you’re in a hotel with loads of special features.

Our Best Value awardee, the Patriot Camper X1, is definitely one of the most affordable RVs we’ve come across. The great thing is, for its price, it covers pretty much all the basics for a comfortable trip. If you’re on a tight budget, you won’t regret getting this.

And lastly, our Top Pick, the SLRV Expedition FTS800 4×4, is the best option for long-time travelers. It’s also great if you have a child, as it comes with a child’s room.

We hope that this article has been of help to you.

Stay safe, be prepared.
