SUMMARY:

If budget isn’t ever an issue and I had to recommend the best RV bike rack today, it would be Swagman’s XC2 hitch mount bike carrier. And it just so happened that it comes in a fraction of other carriers’ prices!

And considering its unique but functional features, it’s no wonder that it’s become this review’s Editor’s Choice.

Lightweight and easy to install and use, Swagman’s hitch bike rack is every beginner and a weekend warrior’s dream come true.

But it’s also why I initially underestimated this guy.

It started off really well, with the package arriving much earlier than the promised date. Right out of the box it felt very lightweight, which made me think about its quality.

There are accessories included as well as a manual. Upon installation, I noticed that not only were the manual diagrams too small to see clearly, but the instructions were a bit vague too.

So, if you’re not much of a handyman, it would most likely take you 30 to 45 minutes of installation. But if you’re used to this, it could be done in under 10 minutes, which I did.

The thing with this rack…

It’s a hitch mounted rack, so if you don’t have a trailer hitch on your vehicle, you would have to install one, or this won’t be of much use to you.

It included several washers, but the manual didn’t mention anything about them, so you’d have to be quite intuitive or call the customer care (which was excellent, by the way) to be able to insert them.

As a result, I had to remove the screws on the wheel hoops to be able to insert the washers in. Lucky me because I actually knew where the washers should go. But if you don’t, you may have to do a bit of research before installing this on your vehicle.

Another thing…

The hole in the horizontal bar that goes into the receiver hitch is actually threaded, so you may want to take note of that.

Because of this, a standard receiver hitch won’t work, and you’d need to purchase a Swagman threaded hitch pin lock. Again, lucky me because I happened to purchase from Swagman just for uniformity. It’s quite expensive, though; much more expensive than other hitch locks.

On the brighter side…

Once it’s up, it’s one sharp little guy on the back of your vehicle or RV, thanks to its good minimalistic looks.

Another thing that I really like about it is how it hangs just low enough for the bikes to be lifted or hauled easily by anyone in the family (even a child!) but still high enough for it to be safe on rough terrains.

Now, let’s go to the cooler stuff.

It has upright ratchet arms that you can adjust with a press of a button to accommodate any size of bike frame you may have. One thing that I’ve noticed is that an arm tends to leave a gap if clamped down on a very small bike frame.

In that case, you can stuff a filler in, though that wouldn’t feel very secure.

Another thing about the arms is that they’re thoughtfully covered in rubber so as not to damage your bike’s paint job.

But then, I think it’s still a bit too tough as it was still able to leave a teeny tiny scratch on mine. So, you’d do well to put a cover in between the clamp and your bike while in use.

But it doesn’t end there.

It also comes in a total of four-wheel hooks to further secure your bikes. They can fit tire sizes from 20 to 29 inches.

That being said, a fat bike wouldn’t probably fit in it. But if you really want this lightweight best bike rack, you can purchase a bigger wheel loop that’s sold separately.

These wheel loops can be adjusted by sliding them to your desired distance and locking them in place after.

Overall, this carrier can accommodate bike frames up to 23.2 inches.

But take note:

In a bouncy ride, your bike can also possibly bounce out of the hoops, so I highly suggest that you strap it down on the hoops with a bungee cord or any tough cord.

Once my 30 lbs bike was strapped in, the hold felt noticeably solid. During our trip, it also didn’t sway, so it almost felt like there was nothing hanging on the back of my car.

And the best thing about it? It’s RV-approved, so you can also use it to take your bikes with you on camping or hiking!

Another thing that you might want to consider is while it can be attached to your car’s tail, that would also mean that you’d have to fold it down whenever you want to access your tailgate. This could be an issue if you’re impatient, but generally it’s not much of a nuisance.

And at the end of the day…

You can just fold this little guy up and it will transform into a compact little gear that you can store at the back of your car or any small space. Plus points for that!

SUMMARY:

If you’re looking for a lightweight and easy-to-carry RV bike rack within your budget, our Best Value RV ladder bike rack from Cambo might just fit the bill.

Indeed, we’ve searched high and low for the most reasonably priced best bike rack on the market and this is the best one that we found.

It may have come in a not-so-impressive packaging, but its overall design proved to be unique and quite clever.

As its name suggests, this rack is mounted on an RV ladder. It’s foldable for easy and space-efficient storage, but when it opens, it has this 90-degree L-shape.

As for the installation…

It was fairly quick and even much simpler than the Editor’s Choice Swagman’s, but it’s not without a challenge.

For one, the cotter pins didn’t really line up with the holes. Also, for it to be more secure, this ladder mounted rack has to be installed on the highest rung of your RV ladder.

That means hoisting the bike up and even stepping somewhere high to be able to reach the highest rung. That being said you’d have to have a helpful pair of hands to assist you.

It’s made of steel, but it felt rather lightweight. Maybe too light for my (or your) liking.

It has form-fit cradles to securely hold the bikes in place, in addition to rubber holders in each bar.

In addition to these…

This rack also comes with two pieces of straps for further security.

And weren’t they so needed indeed.

The thing is, this rack may not be for heavy-duty use, so thank goodness for the straps provided.

It’s stated that it can hold up to two bikes with a maximum weight capacity of 60 pounds.

We’ve used two mountain bikes to test it out, but in the end, these two bikes weren’t able to go out into the highway as the lower support bars instantly bent downwards under the weight of the bikes. They had a total of 60 pounds flat.

So, with that we’ve concluded that it’s just not for very heavy bikes.

But then, if you’re looking for a ladder mounted rack for your lighter bikes (or children’s bikes), then this might be your best bet.

And that’s not all.

The black rubber placers also tend to leave black rub marks on the bikes if used for a very long period of time. But if you’re just using it for a few hours to a couple of days, you should be fine.

On the other hand, the two straps provided were very strong. As a matter of fact, they’re able to hold the bikes up when the lower bars bent downward.

But take note:

It would be better to use more straps for this rack. And make sure to use very tough straps.

Also, as stated on their product page, proper strap placement also does wonders to the longevity of this rack’s hold on your bike.

The most advisable place to wrap the provided strap in is around the lower support bar together with the lower ladder rung. Then use the other strap to secure the bikes with the rack.

One thing I’ve noticed…

Thanks to the tough straps, the vibrations and shakiness caused by a bouncy ride was reduced. So, make sure to strap ‘em real tight!

Now, you might be wondering…

What about the bent bars?

Well, that can still be remedied with a good spacer to lift them up. But I’d advise you to just not use it for very heavy bikes.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

Going on an ultimate family vacation? You can now rest your worries about bringing everyone’s bike with this 4-hitch bike rack from Allen Sports.

So, what can we expect from the brand that’s one of the pioneers of bike racks?

Well, its durability and great weight capacity, making it this review’s Top Pick. But what I love the most is its very convenient and unique features!

The bike rack was quite heavy right out of the box, which was totally unexpected as it looked very simple at first glance, much like the Editor’s Choice Swagman bike rack.

Little did we know…

We’re yet to discover a whole new level of excellence in design.

But let’s start with the installation first. It wasn’t very troublesome. I was able to install it within five minutes. But if you’re a beginner, there’s also a manual which was very easy to understand, thank goodness.

Interestingly, it came with two keys for the hitch receiver. These are supposed to lock them so you could leave your rack without any worries about theft. So, make sure not to lose the keys.

On the other hand…

I don’t think they’d be very effective in keeping thieves out as it would still be very easy to take the bikes away, so I highly suggest that you don’t rely on the lock too much and buy a better lock.

This thing can hold four bikes and has a hefty maximum weight capacity of 140 pounds! It’s also available in a 5-bike variation.

The thing is, I like to get a bike rack with more space than the number of bikes I’m planning to use it with. So, a 4-bike rack is a perfect bill.

So how was it?

Now, here comes the tricky part. You actually have to have a plan regarding the set of bikes you’ll put in this rack.

If it’s four children’s bikes, then there will be no problem at all. But if you’re going to fit four hefty mountain bikes in it, I’m afraid your babies wouldn’t be so snug and comfy with it.

I mean, they’ll fit alright. But there’s a tendency that they’d sit very close to each other and may even bump with each other if they’re all the same height.

On the flip side…

If you’re going to put a combination of various bikes for the whole family (women’s bike, men’s bike, children’s bike), then they would be much easier to assemble due to their difference in size.

Aside from that, there are also rubber holders to make sure the bikes are securely attached. But the thing is, I’ve heard a few complaints about them breaking so easily.

While mine hasn’t broken yet, I think that has something to do with sun exposure. The rubbers get brittle and eventually break.

On a positive note…

I also like how these holders can be adjusted to accommodate the thickness of my bike. So that’s another point for versatility.

Now, here’s the coolest part. The rack can be folded up, so if you don’t have much time to disassemble it after your trip, you can just leave it attached in your car or RV and just fold it up so it’s not getting in the way.

But that’s not all!

If you hate how most bike racks tend to get in the way whenever you need to access your back compartment, Allen has a solution for that! This bike rack can actually be tilted down so you can access the trunk of your car without having to remove the rack altogether.

And it’s so strong that even when tilted down with the weight of four bikes, it still won’t touch the ground!

Yep, it’s so durable that it’s unbelievable.

But then, something so wonderful won’t be without flaws.

Despite its anti-wobble hitch, we noticed quite a lot of clunking sounds when we took it to the highway.

While we’re pretty much confident about its strength and ability to hold all four of our bikes, this could be an issue for people who hate clanking racks on the back of their cars.

To prevent this, we’ve secured some parts of the bikes with the ever-dependable bungee cords and everything was peachy again.

And because this rack is so reliable…

We’ve been using it for six months now and it has seen both the sun and snow, and still, its finish and material aren’t disintegrating so far.

For its reasonable price, I’d say this masterpiece is very much on par with those that are from elite brands.

Bottom Line: Stability is where it’s at with this 2-bike carrier from Swagman. Aside from its well-built features, it also comes with a bumper adapter for more versatility.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

If you’re looking for a lightweight RV bike rack for your one bike, this 2-bike carrier is the right bike rack for you!

Yes, it’s a 2-bike carrier but lightweight and fuss-free enough that it has become a crowd favorite as a single-bike holder.

Packaging wasn’t as impressive as the instructions, but its installation more than made up for it. For experts, it would take less than 5 minutes. If you’re a beginner, fifteen minutes would be long enough for you!

Just take note that you’d need wrenches and screwdrivers to get this guy up and running.

Right out of the box…

It felt suspiciously lightweight. Its framing was a bit thin, too.

But let me tell you: it’s actually the best RV bike rack when it comes to stability.

Like the Editor’s Choice, which is also another Swagman product, this one has wheel loops and upside-down U clamp holders.

It also installs the same, which is through the hitch receiver of your vehicle or RV.

Now, take note…

The support bar is threaded, so I wasn’t able to put a locking pin in. Suffice to say, you’d have to make the extra effort to find other locking points for that.

And while installed, like most users, we’ve also noticed that the handlebar of the inner bike was sticking way too much on the window. So probably it would either scratch or break it once we take it out on the highway.

But it doesn’t end there…

Because this unit actually came with a 2-inch bumper adapter!

For some people, 2 inches may not be enough, but it was a great help for us.

But here’s the tricky part: you might be tempted to put a longer extension in there, especially if you just don’t have a bumper at all.

We’ve tried that and what we found out was that it would wiggle so bad with a longer extension.

Of course, it will!

Meanwhile, with the 2-inch adaptor (or without), it was unbelievably steady, even on the freeway!

It’s so steady that if I were to rank the most solid and steady bike carriers I’ve ever tried, this little guy would be in the top three.

Okay, amazing but let’s go to the not-so-perfect stuff.

It has two upright arms that are adjustable. They work nice and tight, but the thing is, they tend to scratch the bikes’ paint.

Now, I’m just telling you this, but it’s not much of a big deal. You could either put a rag or any cover in between the arm and the bike, or you could also clamp down so hard that it will be impossible for the bike to move and get scratched.

Hoisting the bikes up was a piece of cake, too. But before that, you have to plan your bike set first.

Why even do that?

Well, it may be a 2-bike carrier, but it’s not for heavy-duty use. If you’re going to fit two monster bikes in there, just forget it. It’s either two lightweight bikes or one lightweight with one heavy bike.

If your two bikes are bulky, you would most probably have to spend extra few minutes changing positions just to fit the two together.

On the brighter side…

My favorite feature outweighs all of these small inconveniences. I just love how I can fold the upright bar down to be able to access the back storage of my car or RV without having to remove this bike carrier altogether!

7

Bottom Line: One of the most reasonably priced racks on the market, this bike rack installs on the bumper of your vehicle and could adjust to whatever the length of your bike.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

If you can’t be bothered to install a hitch receiver on your vehicle, you don’t really have to inconvenience yourself and spend more than your budget allows because you can just install your bike rack on the bumper itself!

We didn’t have to look further because this bumper bike rack from Quick Products isn’t only convenient to install but very agreeably priced as well!

This bumper-mounted rack has a very simple design that even first-timers can configure.

The set comes with two pieces of wheel slots along with the accessories needed to install them on your car’s bumper.

All you’ll need to do is attach the two wheel wells in the bumper and you’re good to go.

But before that…

Make sure to measure the clearance between the bumper and your vehicle first so that you’d know if the rack would indeed fit.

Actually, you might as well do that before buying this thing. You need to have at least more than one inch of clearance.

Aside from that, measure the dimensions of your bumper, too. This bumper-mounted rack works on a square four-inch bumper. But then, you can always modify it if you’re already an expert handyman.

Another thing…

You might encounter some complications if you have a spare tire at the back of your vehicle, so you might also want to take that into consideration.

Now, once it’s installed, it’s unstoppable!

Many people mistake it for a flimsy bike carrier and I can’t blame them. This thing indeed looks quite weak and thin.

But in reality…

It’s strong as heck, which came as a surprise even to us as its weight capacity is only 30 pounds per slot, with a total of 60 pounds.

I was actually able to put not just one but two whole mountain bikes in it. We took it on the road and I didn’t feel any wobbling at all.

Aside from that, I was also able to stand on it to further test it out and it didn’t budge a bit!

Now, that’s what we call strength.

Another nice thing about it is the two slots don’t come attached to each other. They’re two separate pieces and installed separately.

So, what does this mean?

It means that you can adjust the distance between the two to fit your bike’s size and length!

Just make sure to measure the distance of your bike’s wheels first by putting them on the slots attached to the bumper before tightening the bolts.

But aside from that, it’s also nice that I can get in between them whenever I have to access the back of the vehicle.

There’s also a pole for you to use as an anchor for your bikes.

Because the thing is…

This rack is great and all, but I don’t think it would be very secure without cords. Even the manufacturer has recommended it.

That’s what the pole is for. I used a few pieces of bungee cords and tied them around the bikes and to the pole for added security and hold.

Another thing is it would be better if you’ll use this rack for bikes of identical or near-identical sizes, to avoid any issues with the wheel slots

After that…

You can rest the bikes facing opposite ways so that the handlebars won’t bump with each other.

And speaking of handlebars…

I also have the very common problem of the handlebar bumping into the vehicle’s glass. What I did is put a cushion to the handlebar (anything soft or foamy) and everything’s fine again.

All in all, I’d say this rack excels best in strength. As for its hold, it’s not very impressive without the help of cords and some other adjustments. But after all that, it’s pretty steady and wobble-free for a peaceful trip.

Bottom Line: A no-nonsense RV-rated bike carrier that can hold up to two bikes with a great total weight capacity of 90 pounds.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

Don’t like the bells and whistles that come with other great RV bike carriers? Then this Swagman Dispatch would fit the bill perfectly.

As a matter of fact, we’ve heard nothing but praises and seen nothing but 5-star ratings for this crowd-pleaser.

This good reputation must have come from its simplicity and no-nonsense design. And I mean just the necessities and nothing more.

From the makers of the most trusted bike racks, this Swagman Dispatch bike rack can hold up to two bikes with a maximum weight capacity of 45 pounds each.

And it does so steadily and solidly.

Installation was a breeze even for beginners as it comes with a clear as sun installation guide and manual.

It’s compatible with a 2-inch hitch receiver and if installed correctly, would stay stable and solid even on long road trips.

It was proven on our 800-kilometer trip, where it stayed solid without any rattle, as seen on our back camera. This alone made our money so worth it as not many bike carriers today can go through that distance without any rattling.

The total weight of our two bikes was 80 pounds.

Another cool thing…

Is its security lock. Again, it’s kind of thrilling because I’ve seen only a few bike racks that have working security locks integrated into them.

The best thing about it? The security lock actually works! It’s so solid that I didn’t think we’d need more locks to secure the rack and the bikes, but I’ve added one more to be sure.

But yes, if you’re looking for one that won’t require you to buy a lock, this is it.

It has two sets of wheel trays to secure your bikes so that they don’t hang dangerously from your RV.

The tradeoff?

It can only fit average tire sizes, so if you have a fat-tire bike, it won’t probably fit.

Aside from the wheel trays, it also has two adjustable arms. One issue that we often encounter with this kind of component is the scratching of the bikes. So, I was actually thankful to see that these ones are rubberized, so they’re more forgiving on the bikes.

Their hold was fine but not super solid as they don’t lock.

Good thing…

This bike rack also came with straps. I used the straps on the three main points of the bike and they certainly contributed to the steady and solid hold during our journey.

This RV bike rack conveniently folds up, so it takes less space on your storage.

It’s also 5th wheel approved if you’re looking for one.

Bottom Line: A high-capacity hitch receiver bike rack that can carry up to 140 lbs. bikes, it also boasts of locking points to keep your rack and your bikes safe from thieves.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

Looking for an RV bike rack that’s heavy-duty enough to carry even fat tire bikes and e-bikes?

They’re not very easy to come by on the market today and this hitch receiver bike rack from Hyperax proved to be the best one yet.

Starting off great…

Everything in this set was packaged really nicely. They were all stacked inside a thick box with dividers and everything was individually packed.

It also came with a booklet of instructions. Though the images weren’t so clear, the instructions were easy enough for beginners to understand.

As for the installation, it was quite easy too and took me less than ten minutes.

It can fit in a two-inch receiver that is class 3 or higher, so it’s pretty versatile.

Just remember:

Make sure to ONLY mount it in hitch receivers that are chassis-mounted, NOT on bumper-mounted ones. This is a heavy-duty bike carrier and a vehicle bumper may not be strong enough to carry this.

Doing so could result in nasty road accidents.

Moving on, this could just be one of the highest-capacity bike carriers I have ever had. With a maximum weight capacity of 140 lbs., it can very easily carry two bikes weighing 70 lbs. each.

Or a single hefty 85 lbs. bike. It’s your call as long as you don’t go beyond the total of 140 lbs.

What’s cooler…

Is the fact that this Hyperax RV bike rack is one of the very few that have the ability to carry e-bikes and fat tire bikes!

Yes, you’ve read it right. So, I didn’t pass up the opportunity and took it on the road to carry my partner and my e-bikes.

They indeed fit perfectly, but not without a few trade-offs (more on that later).

Like most hitch-mounted bike carriers, it has the usual racket arms as well as wheel slots.

Upon installation, you can adjust and decide the distance between the wheel slots, and you can also adjust them later on for your other bikes.

Aside from this…

It also features a total of three locks! The first lock is for the attachment of the rock to the hitch receiver. The next two are for the bikes themselves. Each ratchet arm is lockable, so you’re not just double secured but triple too!

Now, don’t expect the locks to be such monsters. It can only keep a petty thief away but not a prepared and well-equipped one, so do it like me and put extra locks on your bikes.

Another thoughtful detail is the arms. Unlike other bike carriers with the same arms, these arms were made to avoid scratching and damaging the bikes’ paint job!

Each arm was rubberized and covered softly so they won’t damage your prized bikes.

In addition to this…

It can also be tilted down so you won’t have to inconveniently remove the whole hefty thing just to get something out of the trunk of your car!

Moreover, this feature also comes useful when hauling the bikes in and out of the rack. Lowering the rack makes it so much easier rather than having to lift the bikes just to load them in.

Then, there is also some nice little touch which are the little reflectors on a few parts of the rack. Although they’re very small and barely helpful, it’s still nice. But then, don’t forget to add a bit more reflector to this!

It also comes complete with straps to help you secure your bikes better. The bummer? They’re velcro straps and not very strong ones at that!

Though that’s another nice touch, you’d definitely do well to buy stronger bungee cords to make sure your bikes won’t come flying across the highway anytime soon.

Buyer's Guide:
How To Choose The Best RV Bike Racks

Buying a bike rack to mount on your RV is no joke. Aside from that fact that most of them don’t come cheap, the safety of not only your bikes but of other drivers on the road also lie in your rack’s quality.

That’s why it’s very important to take some time and consider some things before getting one first.

Below are just some of the most important things that you should consider before buying an RV bike rack.

Your RV’s Load Restriction

Not many people know it, but this might just be the most important one. This is especially true if you’re buying a bumper-mounted bike rack.

There will always be weight limitations on RV bumpers (and even with your regular vehicles) and if you still don’t know your RV’s restriction, make sure to call your manufacturer immediately before buying a rack.

Not doing this…

Could result in you attaching much heavier attachments to your RV’s bumper and causing an accident on the road.

If your RV bike rack is heavier than the weight limit, it might come off while you’re on the road and could even cause a deadly accident. So, make sure to put this on the top of your checklist.

Your Lifestyle

Are you a bachelor? Or a family person? Your lifestyle and everyday routine are important considerations when getting a bike rack.

If you already have a family who goes with you every time you travel, you’d most probably need a three to four bike carrier. Sometimes, the children even like to take a friend with them so that’s another bike slot to consider!

If you’re a bachelor/bachelorette who likes to cycle for a hobby, a single or dual bike carrier would be alright, and make sure that they’re durable and heavy-duty enough to hold fat-tire bikes.

Type of Mount

Now, you’ve already seen bike racks of different mounts. But you can’t just pick one that appeals best to you without considering its mount and its compatibility with your vehicle.

Hitch-mount bike racks are one of the most popular choices today. As the name suggests, you just attach it through your RV hitch receiver. Now, it may be popular, but not all vehicles are compatible with a hitch rack.

You must make sure first that your bike rack of choice IS RV-rated as the two hitches can’t be interchanged.

On the other hand…

Bumper mounts attach to your RV’s bumper. It could be front or back.

As mentioned earlier, you must know your RV bumper’s weight restriction first. But aside from that, you must also make sure that the bumper is attached to the chassis of your vehicle or RV itself.

This is another crucial factor because nobody wants to have their bumper along with the bike getting dragged on the highway while you’re driving. It could prove to be really dangerous, too.

Meanwhile…

The ladder mount is also another popular choice as most RVs have ceiling ladders anyway. If you’re planning to get this rack type, make sure that your RV’s ladder is strong and durable enough to avoid mishaps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1: How do you install a bike rack for RV?

A - It depends on the mount type of the RV bike rack that you got. If it’s a hitch-mount rack, all you have to do is to attach it to the hitch receiver on your vehicle. Bumper mounts and ladder mounts would mostly require you to use wrenches and screws but generally, it should be done within an hour.

Question 2: How do you properly load bikes on a RV bike rack?

A - Basically, it’s as simple as hauling your bike into the carrier. Just make sure to double-check to confirm that the wheels are safely cradled in the wheel slots and the components that hold the bike down are snug and fit. You may also want to add more straps if you want to be perfectly confident and secure.

Question 3: Do you need a special bike rack for an RV?

A - You definitely need a special bike rack for a RV. Your bike rack should be RV-rated or RV-approved. The reason for this is not all RVs and regular vehicles have the same suspension and hold, and this is the reason why so many bike racks end up being dragged on the road. Moreover, your bike rack would definitely experience more strain and bumps on the road being on a RV compared to a regular vehicle. That’s why RV-rated bike carriers are always more durable and strong.

But there are actually products on the market that have both a reasonable price along with good quality. And that’s what we tested in this metric.
