Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

Now, this is a bushcraft bag that checked almost all the boxes and has been doing so for decades now.

Coming from one of the best-known makers of the best bushcraft backpacks for years and years now, this roundup’s Editor’s Choice, the Mountaintop 40-liter capacity survival backpack is well-loved mostly because of its very generous compartments.

Made of high-quality polyester fabric, it’s not only water-resistant but is also tear-proof so it was actually able to hold my belongings along with my camera equipment in one go!

It’s advertised to carry things for a 3-day escapade but it’s actually able to hold belongings for 4 days.

Yes, you’ve read that right.

Not only that, but I even had more room to spare for souvenirs to be brought back home.

While it’s perfectly heavy-duty and high-capacity, it’s surprisingly lightweight at only 1.05 kilograms so it’s not adding to the burden on my back. Thanks for that!

As for the fit, it has waist straps as well as chest straps so you wouldn’t have any problem with a big backpack slapping your back with every step.

And speaking of straps, it also features some compression straps to keep the heavy loads well-distributed and balanced.

Now, you’ll be pleased to know…

That the zippers are YKK zippers as well as the buckle! I’m not very particular when it comes to that but I know some friends who want the zippers of their backs made by a high-quality and well-known brand.

The padded shoulder straps are also lined with mesh which helped keep sweat at bay while adding more comfort.

But my favorite part?

My favorite part would be the bottom pocket through which you can access the main compartment! This feature let me get my belongings that were packed in the very bottom of my backpack without having to get everything out of the back.

Isn’t that so cool and convenient?

Oh, and before I forget, it also has a rain cover that’s kept at the bottom of the bag which you can use to cover your bushcraft backpack when it’s raining. The cool thing is, even when I walked through rain and fog for a good couple of hours, I was surprised to find my bag very much dry afterward.

One small drawback though would be the lack of more little pockets for organization. But when, when this backpack was able to take care of me and keep me comfortable for four whole days, who am I to complain about pockets?

SUMMARY:

If you thought that getting a good bushcraft backpack that can be an investment with its features and great quality would cost you a lot, then check what we’ve found.

The Rothco G.I. type mini Alice pack is made to mirror not only those cool G.I. bags but also their quality.

As a matter of fact…

This Alice pack is this review’s Best Value awardee and one of the reasons is its highlight isn’t some fancy features or design, but the great quality of its material.

This canvas bushcraft backpack isn’t only made from a canvas material but a thick and heavy one, too, almost military-grade.

This being of almost 24L capacity, I happened to overfill it one time, thanks to its open-mouthed main compartment. It’s too late when I realized it but surprisingly, it held up very well. I came home without any holes or damage to my bushcraft rucksack and it looked good as new.

I actually have a colleague who has owned one for around three years now and says it’s still undamaged, so props to that!

In case you might be wondering…

The main compartment has a drawstring with a flap over it for an added security. In some instances, that would make getting some stuff from it quite a hassle if you’re out hiking or camping.

But as it’s only a mini Alice pack, I really don’t mind that drawback. This isn’t what you should be getting for a heavy-duty 3-day carrier anyway.

But then, this guy proved to be a trooper for my day hiking and other escapades. It can also be a cool EDC bushcraft backpack thanks to its versatile design that you can even use at home or school.

As for the metals…

The zippers and the buckles sure looked flimsy at first look. But I learned that it’s made to be military-grade as well and though it looked like I could bend the buckle with my two fingers, they’re still all in one piece until today.

It has three pockets on the front where you can store your smaller accessories or the valuables you’d like to be easily accessed such as your phone or earphones.

The shoulder straps are adjustable and they can even work as a tactical backpack thanks to the attachment straps on each front pocket.

Let me tell you though…

That the canvas material isn’t waterproof nor water-resistant. But then, for a very affordable bag, I wouldn’t have asked for more. But in case you want to get this bushcraft rucksack, you can always treat the fabric or the flap to make it somehow watertight.

And my favorite part?

It’s simple, really, and its color options come in Olive Drab, Black, Earth Brown, Woodland Camo, and Coyote Brown.

If you’re like me who loves rustic nature colors that don’t stand out in the forest or in the mountains, then this is your pack! I particularly love the Olive Drab that I have because it looked very military without having the camo prints.

Bottom Line: A comfy and cozy bushcraft bag with durable and long-lasting canvas and cotton material and padded shoulder straps to walk you through the day in ease and comfort.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

Aside from its good vintage looks which, by the way, has caught a few good eyes outside, one of the things to be prided on about this bushcraft pack is its material and impeccable make, which prompted us to give it a perfect score in Strength and Durability metric, making it this review’s Top Pick!

This Gootium high-density bushcraft pack is designed to be used in many situations, including, well, bush crafting.

So what makes this one of the best bushcraft backpacks among the sea of rucksacks on the market?

It lies in the material.

Surprisingly, the canvas and cotton combo proved to be durable enough to even carry 30 pounds of weight without ever breaking!

As I didn’t have any outdoor escapade going on when I first got it, like many other users, I used it to carry some groceries and walk for about 30 minutes carrying it.

Turned out, the adjustable shoulder straps are padded so I was able to go home without aching shoulders. Considering that there are not many rucksacks on the market today with padded shoulders easily counts this pack as one of the best bushcraft packs.

In case you’re wondering…

Its main compartment also has a drawstring closure with a flap.

Inside, they’re generous enough to provide the bag with a zippered interior pocket where you can put your keys or phone in.

Although it doesn’t have a laptop compartment, this pack was able to fit my 16-inch laptop inside with more rooms left to spare.

As for the exterior pockets…

It has 3  pockets outside and another good thing about it is they’re all roomy than normal.

Trick: You can tuck the flap of the side pocket to turn it into a bottle holder! And it can hold not only a regular-sized bottle but quite a big one, too.

One thing you might want to know is that the buckles are mainly for aesthetic purposes only but underneath them, there are flap closures that close the pockets securely.

The fabric isn’t waterproof, of course, but it was able to withstand moderate rain for about less than an hour before it seeps into your belongings.

That being said…

It can handle you being in the rain for about five or ten minutes without your belongings getting wet, thanks to the fabric’s thickness and heaviness.

In addition to that…

The sewing is also very noticeably heavy and durable so I was able to carry my stuff in peace.

It’s been with me for less than a year now but I know people who have had it for 3 to 4 years now and still working perfectly so I’m kind of thrilled to see where this best bushcraft backpack in terms of durability would take me!

10

Bottom Line: A heavy-duty bushcraft tactical backpack with an impressive capacity and features including a sleeping bag compartment, hydration compartment, and an integrated rain covering.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

If you mean business and not just the usual EDC bag or rucksack, then this camping backpack from TETON Sports is your best bet.

Its 55-liter capacity and unique features scream nothing but serious business indeed.

Tactical packing is the top priority with its multiple exterior and interior pockets so you can easily pack your belongings and camping gear according to your comfort and strategy.

What’s cooler…

Is that this tactical backpack has a roomy sleeping bag compartment at the bottom and lo and behold, it wasn’t only able to fit a sleeping bag in but also a whole tent while you can attach the tent poles in its numerous attachment loops on the side.

In addition to this, it also features an attached rain covering which you can pull out anytime it pours.

What can I say, it’s more than just a rain covering because, unlike other pack’s covers, this one didn’t fall short but was actually quite bigger than the bag’s size so I was able to cover the entire pack and keep it perfectly dry.

That alone makes this a candidate for the best bushcraft backpack.

But there’s more.

Aside from the side pockets, this backpack also has multi directional compression straps that help in better load distribution.

And for ultimate comfort, you’d be glad to know that the backpack’s pack is channeled for good airflow so you’d stay cool even after hours of walking or hiking while carrying this pack.

Now, for some people, this is a deal-breaker.

It’s the bag’s fit. Well, here’s good news: whether you’re a big tall guy or someone with a slender frame, you’d be glad to know that all of its straps: shoulder strap, sternum strap, and waist straps are all adjustable so you can definitely adjust all you like to fit your body type.

This bushcraft and camping backpack is available in the colors Black, Hunter Green, Coyote Tan, and Mecca Orange if you want your bag to fit your personality.

Meanwhile, the rain covering comes in yellow, which some people could find too bright for bushcraft or camping. But on a positive note, it’s hands down one of the best rain covering I’ve ever come across with.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

Looking to get the most out of your money and get a perfect backpack not only for bush crafting but for the weekdays, as well?

Then this attractive drawstring backpack is your best bet!

Coming in with different shades of coffee, this wilderness survival backpack may seem too stylish to be rugged, but one touch to its durable canvas fabric and you’ll know you’ve made the right decision.

Aside from the cotton canvas material, it has a leather strap running down towards the snap closures of the bag, adding a more vintage feel to it.

Now here’s my favorite thing about it…

It has a dreamy number of pockets (seriously!) inside and outside but the most unique one is the compartment at the back that rests on the wearer’s back where you can keep your cellphone, wallet, or anything valuable that you don’t want to get stolen from your back.

In addition to that, this backpack has a stash pocket inside, adding to 5 more internal pockets.

On the outside, it has 4 external pockets to keep your trinkets and your belongings perfectly organized.

So how rugged is it?

It’s not waterproof, but it proved to be somehow water-resistant to a degree. You could walk in the rain for about five to ten minutes without your belongings getting wet but it’s not really treated to resist water for an hour and more.

The good thing is, its attractive looks let me use it even at work, grocery shopping, or school if I were still a student!

The different coffee shades seriously looked delicious to the eyes which prompted some friends to ask me where I got it.

All the features mentioned make this backpack a versatile buddy not only for bush crafting but many other things, too.

Bottom Line: A heavyweight framed bushcraft backpack that’s perfect for demanding outdoor activities especially hunting.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

If you’re looking for the ultimate best bushcraft backpack, then this sturdy framed giant from ALPS is your best bet.

A favorite among hunters, this big boy is made to conquer the wild with you with its external frame that you can detach to use in hauling meat or other games while carrying the bag on your back.

In addition to that, it also has a drop-down rifle pocket for easy access and even a hydration compartment.

You won’t believe this…

But it has numerous internal and external pockets including two side pockets that are hinged for accessories and even a spotting scope pocket in addition to many others so you can pack tactically and be ready for some serious business.

Empty, this guy weighs around 7 pounds but it has the monstrous capacity of 86 liters, making it perfect for the tall and big guys who often have a hard time finding bags that fit them.

Seriously made for more serious activities where you’ve got to be ready at all times!

Though gigantic, you have nothing to worry about as its straps are adjustable and the waist belt is perfectly and thickly padded with mesh covering so you’re holding to your big bag perfectly while keeping cool.

This badass comes in two variants, Coyote Brown if you like it plain, and Realtree Escape for some camo goodness.

Overall, this bushcraft backpack is made to endure and the only problem you’ll most probably encounter is carrying heavy loads.

SUMMARY:

Veni, Vidi, Vici .”I came, I saw, I conquered.”

Well, that’s what this slinger backpack says on the back panel- but seriously- all these unique features will really make you conquer any situation any day.

Starting with its sling-type design, this EDC bushcraft pack lets you easily swing the bag to your side under your arm, instantly get what you need, and then put it back in a snap.

Moreover, it has molle attachments not only on the outside but on the inside as well with the molle webbings to secure your wallet, phone, and whatnot.

What’s cooler…

That that the zipper has these zipper pulls that make them almost silent, which really appealed to me.

But what I like more is the little detail on the front which is the anti-thief snap that allows you to snap it over the zipper so that the would-be thieves can’t access your front pocket without your knowledge.

Isn’t that great?

Clearly, this guy is made to conquer the city as a bigger EDC bag. But its durable polyester material makes it a great bushcraft backpack as well.

Oh, and it also has a cool velcro panel for your favorite patches as well as a channeled back panel with the words Veni-Vidi-Vici.

Cool, right?

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

Most bushcraft backpacks sure can boast of high-capacity features. But only a few have features such as this TT Trooper pack has.

If you love neat, organized packing, you’ll love the generous amount of molle loops and webbings this backpack has, as well as the internal and external pockets.

This guy has not two but three front pockets with the bottom one being the largest and the top one having its own elastic bands inside to hold all the accessories you’ll need in wilderness survival such as pocket knives and lights.

In addition to that…

This backpack also features two load-distributing aluminum rods which you can also remove if you want.

Inside the spacious main compartment, there are elastic straps to secure your laptop in place or just about anything you don’t want to move around inside your bag as you walk or hike.

With a great 50-liter capacity, this baby is made from durable material which is a unique 700D Cordura fabric that makes it water repellant as well (remember: water-repellant doesn’t mean waterproof).

Framed in an external H-shaped aluminum framing, this Kelty assault pack is certainly one of the kings of bushcraft bags with its trail-ready features such as the big side pocket in which I was able to fit a bottle of 1.5-liter drink, as well as two more side pockets on the other side.

Additionally, it also has a compartment for your sleeping bag or even tent, with which a strap is attached to the top flap covering.

Aside from the spindrift collar that comes fully integrated into your 90-liter backpack, it also has a daisy attachment system running along with the entire backpack so you can attach extra pouches or even use it as a pole or axe holder.

But one warning: The enviable capacity of this 90-liter backpack is so roomy you might over-pack without realizing it!

This waxed canvas backpack sure looks stylish, but don’t let it fool you.

Aside from looking good, this Frost River backpack comes with several built-in features such as an integrated ax sleeve where you can safely and securely store your precious wood-crafting materials in or just about any device you need such as pocket knives.

With a capacity of 33 liters, it may not be meant for extended 4 to 5-day trips, but this will do great as an exceptional EDC bag or a backpack for short and light trips.

Moreover…

This bag features a front stash pocket pair so you can have easier access to the things you need the most.

And best of all, you can do all this while looking premium, thanks to the high quality materials such as the premium leather and waved fabric to add to the solid brass hardware and crisscrossing straps on the side!

Why Trust Us

Experience is the best teacher. I’ve started with being a typical weekend warrior with his flimsy school bag that’s barely holding on. Then I learned that in the most extreme situations (which I like to be involved in, about three to four times a month), a well-made backpack could actually save your life.

So little by little, I started collecting them and testing them to see the perfect companion for me. I’ve seen it all- the OG’s and the new names on the block and now I want to share what I learned with you so you won’t have to go through the expensive task of test and trial!

Buyer Guide:
How To Choose The Best Bushcraft Backpack

Things to Look Out For:

Material – A good backpack material is the waterproof one, such as nylon. Meanwhile, most polyester materials offer UV resistance so they can actually protect your backpack from premature damage so you can use it for more years to come. You’d also want to make sure that the material is robust and long-lasting so it will be able to carry your belongings without breaking.

Size – In bushcraft backpacks, size matters, yes. That is, if you want to be able to bring all your essentials on your escapade.

Weight – Not because it’s big should mean you’d have to endure the painful weight. You don’t want to cause damage to your shoulders and muscles. Big, sturdy, and lightweight bushcraft backpacks actually do exists. Your backpack should help you carry the weight of your things not add to them.

Fit – Again, not because it’s big or has many pockets should mean it’s the perfect one. After all, pockets won’t help you when you’ve been hiking for 5 hours now and your shoulder pain starts to kill you. Pick a backpack that straps fit you perfectly. It’ll make your journey much easier.

Features – Speaking of pockets, an extra handful of pockets for organization won’t hurt. You don’t want all your belongings dumped together in one big pocket as it will make finding a small item a great hassle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1: What is a bushcraft style backpack?

A - Made for Bushcrafting or literally living in the bushes, bushcraft backpacks are backpacks that are made to be robust, long-wearing, and heavy-duty with a generous amount of space for all your essential survival gear and accessories.

Question 2: How to pack a bushcraft backpack?

A - First off, you’d want to group small items together in a separate pocket that’s easily accessible. The heavy items should go either at the top or at the bottom and it’s much better if there’s a pocket on the bottom of your bushcraft backpack where you can access the main compartment through, like the Editor’s Choice, the Mountaintop 40L backpack so you wouldn’t have to bring everything out just to get the bottommost item from your bag.

Question 3: How do I clean my bushcraft backpack?

A - While it may also be on a case-to-case basis, washing your bushcraft backpack in the washing machine isn’t recommendable. Instead, washing it in lukewarm water (lukewarm isn’t hot) while gently brushing the crevices such as the mesh in the padded shoulder straps would preserve the bag’s shape and the quality of the material.

It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.
