Bottom Line: Whether for outdoor activities or for a survival situation, Motorola T600 Talkabout Radio, 2 Pack is a great all-purpose walkie talkie that is packed with features fit for your every need.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

If you’re looking for a great walkie talkie which you can entrust you and your loved ones’ lives with, the search is over as the Motorola T600 Talkabout Radio, 2 Pack, is just that.

First of all…

We really love that these walkie talkies come in neon green color with a bright backlit screen, which makes them highly visible, easy to find, and easy to use even in the dark. Each pack contains two walkie talkies so that you can easily equip your family or group with their own walkie talkies. Weighing only 0.54 pounds, they are a breeze to carry around, as well.

These walkie talkies boast a waterproof rating of IP67, which means that these will work under 1 cm of water for about 30 minutes and are perfectly safe to use even for outdoor activities that involve water, such as fishing and boating

Aside from its waterproofness, another great thing about these walkie talkies is that they can float in the water as well. On top of that, they also have a water-activated flashlight, which means that you will have an easy time retrieving them if you ever drop them in floods, rivers, or any type of water.

The flashlight at the bottom of the radios has white and red LEDs to prevent any damage to your night vision when using them in the dark. The cool thing about the flashlight is that it will turn off automatically after about 30 minutes or when the battery is about to run low.

But the main highlight of these walkie talkies is their maximum operating range of up to 35 miles, which makes these perfect for long-range communication. They have a total of 22 channels with 121 privacy codes to prevent any interference. Fully charged, they can last up to 23 hours.

Another neat little feature of our Editor’s Choice is the emergency button. If you find yourself in distress, simply press the button at the top of each radio and hold it down for about three minutes, and it will send alerts to your companions.

But wait, there’s more…

Each walkie talkie set comes with two belt clips that also function as whistles in case of emergency, a rechargeable NiMH battery pack, a user guide, an accessory brochure, and a Y-shaped charging cable so that you can charge both walkie talkies at the same time.

Here’s the kicker…

In order to change or install batteries, you will have to remove two screws on the battery cover first, which isn’t very convenient, but it’s necessary for waterproofing. It’s also easy enough to do using a screwdriver, a coin, or even the included belt clips.

Not only that…

These walkie talkies are built with durable shells. Dust-proof and resistant to raindrops, they have the capability to endure harsh weather conditions. They also have a low-battery alert so that you can prepare once the battery starts running low. And as for charging, the included charger is capable of a 3-hour fast charging.

Aside from two radios, each set contains two 1100 mAh Li-ion batteries, two chargers, two air acoustic earpieces, belt clips, two hand straps, and a user manual.

We’ve tested these walkie talkies and found that in a very urban area with lots of buildings, we only got 0.5 to 1.5 miles. However, it can reach a maximum range of up to 3 miles, given that you’re in an open or rural area.

As such…

We wouldn’t recommend these walkie talkies if you’re looking for something that is capable of long-range communication. The incoming transmissions can be detected by the scan button, which scans all the channels before pausing for about six seconds on the first channel with a current communication before moving on to the next. The monitor function serves to adjust the volume of any incoming transmission. In areas with minimal or no obstruction, this walkie talkie can easily reach a 28-mile range.

Going to an area with unpredictable weather? No worries, as the NOAA weather radio and weather alert technology will use an alarm to warn you if there’s a possibility of extreme weather occurring.

You can take advantage of the included rechargeable 700mAh battery packs and drop-in charger to charge both radios at the same time. You can also use the micro USB charging cable and charge them from your desktop charger for convenience.

However…

You have to keep in mind that these walkie talkies are not waterproof at all, so we don’t recommend using them around water.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

Anyone who needs a completely waterproof walkie talkie for their job or for their hobby should check out the DEWALT DXFRS300 1-Watt Heavy-Duty Walkie Talkies (2 Pack).

These high-performance walkie talkies are compact and lightweight, weighing only less than a pound, making them easy to carry around with you while doing tasks. Their rubbery, anti-slip design makes them perfect to use in tough jobs such as construction. The 360° swivel holster enables you to rotate the walkie talkies sideways and use them in any position you prefer.

They have 22 channels, each preset with privacy codes, and an impressive total of 2,662 channel combinations. These walkie talkies are perfect for long-distance communication; a watt of power can give a range of up to 250,000 sq. ft. or 20 floors of a building.

In addition to that…

These radios have a waterproof rating of IP67, making them not just capable of withstanding a 30-minute immersion in any water that’s 1-meter deep but are also dust-proof. They are shock-resistant as well— to test this claim, we tried dropping them about 2 meters to the ground, and true enough, they’re still working perfectly afterward.

The VOX function, which allows easy hands-free communication, makes these walkie talkies multitasking-friendly, so they are great for front desk receptionists, retail workers, and food service providers. If you’re working in a particularly noisy environment, you won’t have to worry about missing a call anymore, as these come with a vibrating feature to alert you of an incoming transmission.

There are a few things more annoying than when you put your radio in your pocket, and it would suddenly change the channel. Well, no more of that because these walkie talkies have a Key Lock feature to prevent just that. You can get 12 hours of use out of these, but on top of that, they also have a battery-saving function, and we can confidently say that you can use these all day without having the need for a recharge.

What’s the catch?

Well, these walkie talkies cost more compared to the other walkie talkies featured on this list but considering the durability and performance of these feature-packed walkie talkies, we’d say they’re absolutely worthy of investment.

Bottom Line: The BAOFENG BF-88A Long-Range Walkie Talkie Two-Way Radio (10 Pack) is an excellent option for anyone looking for a set of walkie talkies with long battery life to equip their family or group members.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

The BAOFENG BF-88A Long-Range Walkie Talkie Two-Way Radio (10 Pack) is a great way to outfit your group or family with good-quality walkie talkies that have a large battery capacity.

These radios come in slim bodies that are easy to hold and bring anywhere. The non-removable antenna provides crystal-clear sound for a range of about 3 km, while the built-in LED flashlight aids you to see in the dark or in dim lighting.

They are very easy to use— simply press the PTT button, and a voice prompt will tell you if they’re already on and what channel they’re on. Another nice thing about these is that they will remember the last channel they’re on and won’t change the channel when you turn them off.

These walkie talkies come pre-programmed with 16 channels. Because they utilize FRS frequencies, you can use them right out of the box, and there’s no licensing required. You can also use the included programming cable to program frequencies in them.

On top of that…

What really drew us in about these walkie talkies is their battery capacity. These can be used for up to 35 hours; their already long battery life is prolonged even more by the power-saving feature, which uses a low battery alarm to let you know if the batteries are already running low and need to be recharged. Speaking of which…

They come with a charging dock that makes charging them convenient wherever you are. These radios have a fast-charging time of 2.5 to 3 hours. For hands-free use, there’s a VOX function and earpieces that are included with each radio. Emergency alarm, channel monitor, scanning function, and Busy Channel Lock round out the features of these walkie talkies.

Aside from ten radios, each 10-pack set contains 10 batteries, 10 extra TID batteries, 10 earpieces, 10 desktop chargers, 10 belt clips, 10 wrist straps, 5 user manuals, and a programming cable.

The only downside of these walkie talkies for us is that some people might find the programming instructions quite confusing. In that case, we suggest asking for help from someone who is knowledgeable about programming.

Bottom Line: Highly durable and rugged, the Motorola Talkabout T460 Rechargeable Two-Way Radio Pair would be a great addition to any outdoor enthusiast’s or prepper’s kit.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

Incredible durability and great range are the strongest points of the Motorola Talkabout T460 Rechargeable Two-Way Radio Pair, so if those are your top priorities when choosing a walkie talkie, these are what you need.

With an IP54 rating, these walkie talkies have a durable construction that can withstand heavy-duty use while still retaining lightweightness. They are also well-protected from weather conditions such as light rain and snow, as well as from dust and particles.

The backlit display and built-in LED flashlight help you see in low-light conditions. These radios also have an easy-to-retrieve design that enables them to float in the water in case you drop them. In ideal conditions, 35 miles of range is perfectly possible with these radios.

These walkie talkies feature 22 FRS/GMRS channels, plus 8 repeater channels, with 121 privacy codes. Alkaline (3AA) batteries can provide up to 26 hours of battery life, while a NiMH battery can provide 10 hours of usage.

Featuring a headset jack connector, belt clips, and an iVOX/VOX function, you won’t have a hard time using these hands-free. The VibraCall™ Vibrating Alert will alert you of any incoming transmission without the need for any tone, which is a useful feature in any situation where you need to be inconspicuous.

What’s more…

With 11 weather channels, 7 of which are NOAA channels, providing real-time weather updates and a weather alert feature, you can be assured that you won’t ever encounter bad weather without being prepared.

However, sometimes an emergency can occur no matter how prepared you are. No worries; in case of an emergency, the emergency alert button allows you to send an alert siren and a message to your companions to let them know that you’re in a dangerous situation.

Other notable features are the Push-to-Talk power boost that increases the transmitter power output for an extended transmission range, the Quiet Talk Interruption filter that prevents any interruption when communicating with other Motorola radios (provided they also have this feature), the Eco Smart feature that preserves energy while the radios are charging, and the Keypad Lock prevents any accidental channel switch by requiring a passcode before any changes.

Each package includes 2 NiMH rechargeable battery packs, 2 micro USB wall chargers, two belt clips, a User Guide, and an Accessory Sheet that’s available in English and French. These radios are also compatible with any walkie talkie from any brand, which is great.

The biggest downside we see with these walkie talkies is that they sometimes produce a loud static sound once they detect any activity while scanning for channels, so we can’t really say that these are ideal to use for hunting or any activities that require discretion.

The Retevis RT21 Walkie Talkies Adults Rechargeable Two-Way Radios, Case of 4 is a solid choice for a dependable walkie talkie whether for indoor or outdoor use.

Sleek and compact, these walkie talkies feature a long antenna design that enables stable and clear communication for about half a mile range in a densely populated urban area, and up to 2 miles in a clear area with minimal to no obstruction.

These walkie talkies are dust-proof, drop-proof, and shock-resistant, which makes them an excellent choice to use in rugged environments and outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and mountain-climbing.

While these are marketed as adult walkie talkies, these are so easy to use that even your kids can operate them. Simply turn the radio on, wait for the voice prompt, and press the PTT button whenever you want to speak. These radios have been set up already and are perfectly usable right out of the box without a need for any license.

With the hands-free VOX feature, you won’t have to use your hands to press any button; just speak, and it will automatically detect your voice and begin transmission. 50 CCSS and 208 DCS will keep your communication private and secure. You can also add more CTCSS and DCS codes and tones using any programming cable.

You will get up to 12 hours of continuous use from these radios, and a standby time of 72+ hours, with a 3-hour charging time. The low battery alert feature will warn you once the battery power is running low so that you can recharge the batteries, ensuring that you will never find yourself with a walkie talkie that died on you in the middle of nowhere.

Additionally…

These radios will help to keep you safe if ever you have to separate from your group through its emergency alarm function. They also meet the FCC rule part 95.

With each package, you will get 2 boxes with 2 radios in each box, (4) 1100 mAh Li-ion battery packs, 4 chargers, 4 belt clips, 4 slings, and 2 User Manual in English.

One thing, though…

While these walkie talkies are fantastic, we wish they were louder. It would’ve been nice if these came with earpieces as well.

9

Bottom Line: With its high power output and impressive features, we highly recommend the BAOFENG BF-F8HP (UV-5R 3rd Gen) 8-Watt Dual Band Two-Way Radio to both beginners and experienced ham operators alike.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

Touted as the most powerful BAOFENG model, the BAOFENG BF-F8HP (UV-5R 3rd Gen) 8-Watt Dual Band Two-Way Radio will surely impress both beginners and experienced licensed ham technicians alike.

Having used the popular BAOFENG UV-5R radio for years, we can definitely say that this one is an even better, upgraded version— it is more powerful, has a more rugged feel to it, has a better-quality antenna, has a larger battery capacity, and better range.

This handheld radio boasts a selection of three power levels: Low power (1 watt), Medium power (4-5 watts), and High power, with a maximum output of 8 watts. The battery life will depend on what mode you’re using. In our experience, we get up to 6 hours of continuous use when in 8-watt power, up to 8 hours in 4-watt power, and 16-20 hours in 1-watt power.

Because it’s a dual-band radio, it can operate in VHF and UHF modes. The range drastically differs depending on where you are and how you’re using the radio. If you’re in an open area and operating in VHF mode, you can get up to 15 miles range and 5 miles in urban or populated areas. On the other hand, UHF mode can provide a maximum range of 10 miles in an open area, and up to 6 miles in urban areas.

Another improvement we see is the user manual that comes with each kit; it’s much more in-depth now, which would be really helpful for anyone starting out as a ham operator. Each kit also comes with a 2000 mAh battery, a battery charger, a V-85 antenna, a power adapter, an earpiece, a belt clip, and a hand strap. You will get a 1-year Complimentary Concierge Service and warranty support, as well.

But here’s the rub…

To be able to use this for transmission, you will need a license. As laws and rules differ from state to state, it’s best to know the local regulations regarding radio operations in your area first to prevent breaking them and paying a fine.

You can still use some of the features of this radio even without a license, such as the FM and weather bands, the emergency alarm, and the LED flashlight, though. Still, we encourage you to get a license in order to fully get the most out of this two-way radio— we guarantee that it’s worth it.

These radios are easy to operate and are ready to be used out of the box, which is great during an emergency where every second counts. After being fully charged, the battery life can last for up to 10 hours. The low battery reminder will alert you if the battery needs to be replaced or recharged, while the automatic power-saving function preserves power while charging.

The battery charging is quick, which only takes about a couple of hours. The dual-port charger that’s provided also makes it possible to charge 2 radios at the same time.

In a busy city, we get about a quarter of a mile to 1 mile of range, while it’s possible to get 4 miles of range if you’re in an unobstructed setting.

Because of their incredible handiness, we highly recommend them for hotel and restaurant service providers, as well as for outdoor enthusiasts. The emergency alarm function makes them ideal for emergency medical service providers and security officers too.

Anyone working in noisy environments will also appreciate the squelch level function, which blocks out chatter and background noise, eliminating the need for you to shout at the person you’re conversing with, leaving only crisp and clear audio.

With every package, you will get 4 Retevis RT22 walkie talkies, (4) 1000 mAh rechargeable Li-ion batteries, 4 belt clips, 4 USB cables, 2 dual port USB charger adapters, and 2 user manuals in English.

The waterproof exterior and IP54 weatherproof rating ensure protection from rain, snow, elements, and other weather conditions. Enjoy your time outdoors with the iVOX/VOX hands-free function, which allows you to multitask while remaining safe.

Tired of crappy communication ruining your outdoor trips with your buddies? Well, this two-way radio has a maximum range of 35 miles, allowing you to communicate with your companions even from a great distance. The PTT power boost further enhances the transmission range while saving precious battery life.

The choice is yours on which type of battery you will use to power your radio: the included NiMH rechargeable batteries provide up to 10 hours of continuous use, while 2 AAA batteries will allow the radios to go on for up to 26 hours.

These radios feature 22 channels, each complete with 121 privacy codes, as well as NOAA weather channels and alerts for accurate weather updates even in the wilderness. The built-in LED flashlight and the emergency alert button increase safety during nocturnal adventures or when you’re in a low-light situation, away from your fellow campers.

Furthermore…

Each set includes 2 Motorola Talkabout T465 two-way radios, 2 micro USB wall charging cables, 2 rechargeable batteries, 2 belt clips, 2 pairs of earbuds with PTT microphone, a carry case, a User Guide, and an Accessory Sheet that are both available in English and French.

The only drawback is that the included earbuds don’t fit our ears that well, so definitely some improvement is needed there. For maximum comfort, we suggest using a different pair of earpieces.

Buyer's Guide:
How To Choose The Best Walkie Talkie

Best Survival Walkie Talkie - Bugoutbill.com
  • Save

1 - What are the different types?

Walkie talkies are classified into two categories based on the frequency they transmit: UHF and VHF.

VHF walkie talkies

VHF stands for Very High Frequency. VHF walkie talkies operate on frequencies ranging from 136 to 147 MHz. These radios are better suited for outdoor use when the area is clear and open with no obstructions.

UHF walkie talkies

On the other hand, we have UHF, or Ultra High Frequency, walkie talkies. This type of radio is best for indoor use, like inside concrete buildings or in places where there would be plenty of obstructions, such as wooded areas or very populated urban areas. They operate on frequencies ranging from 400 to 512 MHz.

2 - Features To Look Out For

Emergency features

Walkie talkies have many uses, and one of their main purposes is for survival and emergency preparedness. For that reason, it’s crucial to choose a walkie talkie with emergency features such as a built-in flashlight in case of a power outage and an emergency alarm button that will alert your family or your group if ever you find yourself in a dangerous situation.

VOX function

It’s very important to choose a walkie talkie with an option for hands-free use, especially if you’re going to use it for work or for outdoor activities. That’s why a VOX function is a must.

Weather channels and alerts

Two more essential features, in our opinion, are weather channels and alerts. Weather is unpredictable, so it’s best to be updated wherever you are, in order to be prepared.

3 - Walkie Talkies Top Tips

  • Always keep your walkie talkie clean by consistently wiping off any dust and debris, especially if you’re using it outdoors often. Those can affect the performance of your radio.
  • Store your walkie talkie properly. Better yet, invest in a protective case.
  • Set your walkie talkie’s volume to a level that’s comfortable for your hearing.
  • A lot of walkie talkies are waterproof or water-resistant. However, it’s still best to keep your walkie talkie out of water for better longevity. If you accidentally dropped it in water, quickly retrieve it, turn it off, remove the battery, then briskly shake the water out of the radio. Let it dry in a dry and well-ventilated area, and immediately rush it to a service center.
  • Only use batteries that are suitable and made for your walkie talkie, and make sure they’re original.
  • Make sure that you know the rules and regulations in your state regarding radios, so that you will stay in compliance.
