Yes, you can still enjoy sumptuous foods even on doomsday with the best survival food on the market today!

Canned food is so last decade. If you’re looking to level up your emergency food supply, or just bring something new to your camping table, then you’ll want to consider trying out pre-packed (and planned!) survival foods.

These little wonders even come with planners and pre-calculated amounts of nutrients and calories you’ll need to survive for a number of days!

Of course, they’re made to fill you up while you’re supposedly trying to last!

So we got the seven best of the best survival foods on the market and today, we’re covering:

  • The best survival food for every budget;
  • All of their pros and cons;
  • Their calorie and nutrient counts;

So if you’re down for some food tripping…

Pull up a chair and let’s jump right in.

Introduction

Table Of Contents

Table of Contents

Decades ago, the idea of storing foods that can last for the next two or three decades may have been far-fetched, if not, frivolous and seen as a necessity for the military only.

But with all the natural calamities and disasters that are happening rather unusually frequently these days, the rise of the survival food companies that produce survival kits for long term food storage isn’t surprising.

Most of these foods were freeze-dried and sucked out of all the oxygen in them so they could last for a long time if given proper storage.

Moreover…

Aside from their long shelf life, most survival foods also have their total calories and even protein pre-calculated depending on the number of days a food kit is supposed to last.

That way, you can be sure to last for a number of days while waiting for help to arrive while fortified with the required amount of calories per day to get you moving.

On the other hand…

Not all emergency food kits on the market today can be trusted. After all, it’s what will keep you strong in the most desperate days.

That is why we’ve taken it upon ourselves to find out what survival foods on the market are the best for you.

Because we’re curious, too!

Read on and see what works for you.

Bottom Line: A complete set of emergency food with 104 servings that can keep you and your family well-fed for up to one week.

Pros

Cons

Starting the list with a bang is our Editor’s Choice, ReadyWise 104-serving emergency food kit.

Embodying almost perfectly what a good emergency food kit should be, aside from having 104 servings of food that can fill you and your family up for days without having to go out, it also has a total of 10,200 calories to keep you strong and energetic and ready to face any challenges while trying to survive.

All this goodness came to me in a sturdy plastic container that’s much like a bucket complete with a handle.

That’s a bonus feature as I can actually just carry it to the back of my truck and transport it in case of hurricane warnings.

Aside from that…

It will also serve very well if you’re an adventurist or a camper who’s looking to switch it up from bringing canned foods to something that’s close to homemade meals.

Now, in case you’re wondering, this survival food kit contains:

  • 1 pouch of creamy pasta and vegetable rotini (4 servings a pouch)
  • 1 pouch of savory stroganoff (4 servings a pouch)
  • 1 pouch of pasta alfredo (4 servings a pouch)
  • 1 pouch of creamy tomato basil soup (4 servings a pouch)
  • 1 pouch of freeze-dried peas and corn (8 servings a pouch)
  • 1 pouch of freeze-dried bananas and strawberries (8 servings a pouch)
  • 1 pouch of apple cinnamon cereal (4 servings each) and a pouch of brown sugar and maple multi-grain (4 servings a pouch)
  • 1 pouch of butter sauce (8 servings a pouch)
  • 1 pouch of vanilla pudding (8 servings a pouch)
  • 1 pouch of creamy yogurt (8 servings a pouch)
  • 2 pouches of whey milk (12 servings a pouch)

Now, I know you’re wondering how it tasted. After all, it’s one of the most important aspects you’ll want to look out for aside from its longevity.

The savory meals, such as the pasta dishes and the soups, actually tasted good. I have to admit that I had little faith in the start; they’re mostly freeze-dried after all. But they tasted quite close to what a home cooked meal would taste like. The soup and creams could be a bit lumpy but you can always modify them according to your taste and way.

A big chunk of its calories come from its milk and cereal so it’s great that it also came with fruits to complement them.

And it doesn’t end there.

One packet contains four servings that are about good for one small family or an adult. That eliminates the problem of repacking or resealing that comes with big packs of food that tend to go bad once you open them up just to get a few servings.

And to top it all off, if stored properly (that is away from heat and direct sunlight), it can last for up to 25 years!

Bottom Line: Well-calculated calorie and protein distribution is the power of this emergency food kit from Augason Farms, all packed in a sturdy, portable plastic bucket.

Pros

Cons

One of the leading makers of survival food kits today, Augason Farms also makes individual kits for breakfast foods only or dinner foods only. But if you’re looking to save money while having more varieties, we’ve found this perfect Best Value food kit for you!

This emergency food supply boasts a total of 21,170 calories in total and even 557 grams of protein to ensure that you can still be up for anything even if you only have these around to eat for days.

Like the Editor’s Choice one, it’s also packed in a plastic bucket that’s so sturdy I was even able to use it as a seat without leaving any damage.

The bucket is filled to the brim with food upon opening it. Each variety is individually packed with a number of servings in them, mostly 4 servings each.

This kit contains:

  • 1 pouch of hearty vegetable chicken flavored soup meal
  • 2 pouches of creamy chicken flavored rice
  • 1 pouch of creamy stroganoff
  • 1 pouch of fettuccine alfredo/ Italian Marinara
  • 2 pouches of creamy potato soup mix
  • 1 pouch of cheesy broccoli rice
  • 1 pouch of corn chowder
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Chocolate pudding

You’ll be getting your calories mostly from the rice and the pasta dishes. One thing you’ll most probably want to know is the consistency of the foods.

Most of them are a bit too creamy and mushy. Yes, even the rice. But it played well on the chowder and the soup as they came out thick and creamy as they should be.

Though, it’s to be expected that most emergency food kits wouldn’t be complete without the mushy, barely-recognizable foods, isn’t it? At least I did.

As for the preparation…

This is where it gets a little dissatisfying because you’ll have to have a stove or somewhere to cook in to be able to eat your Augason survival foods.

There are a few that only require you to add water but most main meals call for water and a stove, which is kind of inconvenient if, say, you’re stuck under a bunch of rubbles after an earthquake.

But if you’re getting this for camping or just for your emergency supplies at home, then this is a great pick, especially if you consider its price which is one of the most agreeable on this list, making it our Best Value awardee.

This lunch and dinner kit has a shelf life of 10 to 30 years depending on the condition of its storage. Make sure to keep it away from sunlight exposure and too much heat. That means not storing it on the back of your car, as well.

Bottom Line: A portable, easy-to-prepare survival food kit that’s great for camping and trips, too. No artificial flavorings or colorings added.

Pros

Cons

If you’ve been researching or dealing with survival foods and survival food companies for a while, you’ve most probably heard of Mountain House already.

This company has been making survival food kits for decades now. But what you might not know is that they also make military meals for the United States of America.

Now that’s some serious quality right there.

And yes, this exceptional quality is what made this emergency food kit our Top Pick for this review.

The only difference with their famous MREs is that their regular survival food kits are lower in sodium than the military ones.

Now, if you’re not looking for large supplies but rather just something to get you by over the weekend or a trip, this wonder bucket is for you.

This is because it only has 24 servings encased in 12 pouches overall so it’s great if you don’t want to bring more load onto a trip or adventure.

But don’t make the mistake of underestimating this.

Because I certainly did. What’s inside aren’t only varieties of good food but incredible quality and make as well.

For one, all the meals included in this kit don’t have artificial flavorings and colorings. Now, that’s for you who likes to live a sustainable and clean life!

And that’s not all.

These wholesome meals are encased in pouches that are recyclable with Terracycle so no more guilt about plastic wastes while you’re enjoying these meals anymore.

Moreover, they’re also made to stand on their own and even designed to make you feel like you’re eating from a bowl.

That’s Mountain House trying to make your survival situation better!

This emergency food kit contains:

  • 3 pouches of beef stew
  • 3 pouches of beef stroganoff
  • 2 pouches of granola with milk and blueberries
  • 2 pouches of classic spaghetti with meat sauce
  • 2 pouches of chicken fried rice

Sounds like a small but great quality of meals, doesn’t it? It’s exactly what it is. If you’ll ask me, I love how the meaty dishes actually gave me lumps of meat to chew instead of just a saucy affair.

Not bad for something that you don’t have to cook.

Yes, you’ve read that right.

The Mountain House emergency food kit won’t require you to whip up a stove to be able to prepare your meal so you can eat it whenever and wherever emergency finds you, so long as you have a bit of hot water.

All this goodness is packed in the classic sturdy plastic bucket that you can store at home or easily bring on trips.

Bottom Line: A kit of hearty meals that taste exactly like the classic home-cooked favorites that can last you for around 4 weeks.

Pros

Cons

Nothing seems unique or flashy with these 4Patriots food supplies at first glance aside from the, well, the very patriotic design of the packaging. But that’s the beauty of it.

What I mean is…

The strength of this brand lies in its simplicity and homey goodness. And I mean homey.

The meals consist of the American classics and ones we loved from childhood and up until today, such as:

  • Grammy’s sweet oatmeal
  • Fireside stew
  • America’s Finest Mac and Cheese
  • Frank’s favorite Alfredo
  • Dinner Bell broccoli bake
  • Buttermilk pancake mix
  • Creamy rice and vegetable dinner
  • Sweetly coated banana chips
  • Old fashioned banana pudding
  • Long grained white rice
  • Heartland’s finest powdered milk

Most of these meals only require you to add hot water with only a few exceptions, making it a staple for long term food storage.

And let me tell you…

They are thick. When 4Patriots said “hearty,” they meant every bit of the word because the creamy meals are gooey and thick so they filled us up rather quickly when I thought one pouch was not going to be enough.

Not to mention, they’re flavored beautifully and tasted as if Grammy had just finished cooking it a while ago.

And then there are the sweets.

There’s no shortage of desserts and sweet breakfasts for the sweet tooth either. Their specialty seems to be Grammy’s sweet oatmeal, which will definitely boost everyone’s morale in a survival situation.

Now, technically…

These meals don’t only taste nice but they’re made with such good and wholesome quality, too.

In fact, they’re packed in premium Mylar pouches that were specially designed to keep out the elements that can ruin your dehydrated food: air, moisture, and light.

Here’s the kicker.

This premium Mylar material is the very same material that NASA uses to protect their astronauts in space!

Seriously!

That, along with a high capacity oxygen absorber inside, ensures that your freeze dried foods will stay fresh and tasty even after years in storage.

Bottom Line: An all-in-one bugout bag and emergency bag that comes already complete with everything you’ll ever need in a survival situation such as a stove, water, water filter, food, light sources, fire starter, and more, all packed in a sturdy backpack.

Pros

Cons

Disaster can strike anytime and anywhere. This, we’ve most probably learned by now. If you’re assembling your first emergency bag ever and are anxious about what to include, or if you’re preparing for an incoming hurricane, this emergency kit is something that’s worth considering.

Sustain Supply’s emergency backpack contains literally everything you’ll ever need and more if you’d ever be stuck somewhere for days and won’t be able to go to the grocery store.

Actually…

This supply is enough for two people for 72 hours, as it’s the crucial hours after a disaster.

Needless to say, this is like a relief kit while waiting for help or reinforcement.

You’d be surprised what you’ll be pulling out of this humble backpack.

  • 12 servings of Wise Company emergency food supplies
  • 2 Aqua Literz 33.8 oz Emergency Waters
  • 2 Sustain Survival straws for water filtration
  • 4 Cyalume SnapLights
  • 1 LED lantern
  • 1 fully stocked First Aid Kit
  • 2 emergency blankets
  • 1 portable stove
  • 2 bowls and utensils
  • 1 MoraKniv knife
  • 1 Ferrocerium rod
  • 2 InstaFire tinder
  • 2 whistles.
  • Bath wipes

Yes, I was able to pull out a whole stove from the backpack!

Now, if you’re seeing the pattern that I am seeing, you’ll know that whoever assembled this kit definitely only wants nothing but premium quality tools in his arsenal.

Because hey, you certainly can’t trust your life to subpar tools and supplies.

That being said…

This kit didn’t come dirt cheap but considering the fact that I won’t be using this every day and a time could come when I’d be really thankful I have this, then I’d say it’s a great bang for the buck.

But remember: it doesn’t end with purchasing this emergency bag alone. You’ll have to check every component too. And upon checking, I found out that the light sources included in this kit didn’t come with batteries.

So I still had to go out and buy some and put them in the bag (don’t leave them inside the gadgets!). But then, that’s a small price to pay for something so dependable.

About the food…

These are Wise Company foods, so they’re really meant to be stored for emergencies. That being said, their shelf life is up to 25 years, given that they’re stored properly away from moisture, light, and heat.

But of course, I had to taste it so I’d know whether to buy a kit again and if you really want to know, I’d say there’s nothing unusual about the emergency food. They taste like and have the same texture and consistency as most MREs and freeze-dried foods that I’ve had.

Some were mushy with some bits of meat and vegetables, but the taste was always alright.

The water has a shelf life of 5 years so you may want to mark it with a date you purchased it so you can replace it after 5 years in case you haven’t used it yet.

Regarding the bag…

I’m no newbie in assembling the best survival food kits and supplies. But I was really relieved and glad to see that everything came packed in a good bugout bag, so I barely have to do or find anything.

It’s big and it’s spacious.  There’s even more space for you to upgrade your bag and add more emergency essentials to it.

And it doesn’t even budge when I lift it up so I know that it’ll stay with me when the time comes when I have to take it out of the basement and use it to survive.

You may just want to check the first aid kit included and add some more emergency essentials as I found it quite lacking.

Bottom Line: The best possible nutrition all in the smallest of volume, The Survival Tabs is a literal pack of tablets that are loaded with calories, vitamins, and minerals to keep you alive for up to 60 days.

Pros

Cons

SUMMARY:

If you want to get all futuristic and want to try out those little tablets people take and eat on those Sci-Fi movies, then look no further, because the tablet that’s inspired by space program food is now here on Earth.

Like, really!

The Survival Tabs is simply what it says: tablets. But they’re specially made tablets that are loaded with a total of 15 vitamins and minerals such as Vitamins C, D, E, and Zinc to keep your strength in check while you survive.

Each tablet contains 20 calories so you’ll have to take about 12 tablets a day to fill you up and keep you alive.

This brings me to…

What you have to remember is this isn’t made to make you feel full. It’s made to sustain your body and help you survive when there’s nothing to eat.

This makes it perfect for campers, hikers, adventurers, cyclists, and is even used by rescue teams, firefighters, and expeditionists all over the world.

This is because it is very, very portable and lightweight.

With a total of 180 tablets, all you’ll have to make space for in your bag is this little bottle that carries these tablets and nothing more.

So if you’re looking to lighten up your packs for a trip or an expedition, this is something worth considering.

What’s cooler…

Is it doesn’t taste as it looks! I mean, they look like plain tablets that would taste awful after all. But it’s actually the other way around.

It comes in strawberry, chocolate, vanilla malt, and butterscotch but there is hardly any difference in their color and all look white at first glance.

Flavor-wise, it is very well-made. There’s nothing overwhelming about the taste. Just the right tartness and sweetness.

If there would be a downside to that, it would be the fact that it only has sweet flavors and not savory or meaty ones, which could have come in handy when you start craving some meaty goodness in the middle of the wild.

Nevertheless…

It’s still a steal for me as it has an almost 100% absorption rate.

In case you didn’t know, we are able to absorb only about 40% to 60% of the foods we eat. So to ensure that you’ll be getting every bit of vitamins and calories a tablet has, it’s made to be absorbed by your system almost completely so you’ll actually feel the sudden burst of energy just seconds after eating one!

What’s cooler?

Sweet and tasty as it is, it’s actually gluten-free and non-GMO so anyone can definitely eat this.

Just remember to be very, very careful in storing it, especially if you’re on the road as it could get a little sticky when exposed to heat or moisture.

Bottom Line: Freeze-dried fruits with no additives to keep your health and sugar rush in check in dire times.

Pros

Cons

Disasters and survival situations shouldn’t mean that you’ll have to sacrifice eating healthy and clean. If you’re a big health buff, you’ll love our last find for this review.

It’s Nutristore’s freeze dried fruits. We got the raspberry one as it’s said to be the best one and the crowd favorite.

Encased in a huge tin can are freeze-dried raspberries with no other additives. They’re also said to be frozen fresh so all the nutrients and vitamins that came naturally with the fruit are locked up inside.

Yes, it’s exactly what it is – having fresh fruits at your disposal to keep you healthy wherever disaster may find you.

I was able to eat it as it is, or for a more natural and fresher feel, you can also rehydrate it in hot water for a few minutes and watch as these freeze-dried fruits plump up and come back to life!

Now, you can add them up in your emergency food kit meals such as your packed oatmeal or milk, or just eat them as wholesome desserts.

On the other hand…

If you’re buying this just for the panty, you might find the canister too large for the countertop. Needless to say, it was quite a challenge finding a spot for this container.

Upon opening it, you may also see that it’s filled only a little over halfway through, so the excess space is a little disappointing.

But anyway, there’s nothing a good repacking and rebottling can’t solve.

My favorite part?

It’s backed by 100% Customer Satisfaction Guarantee, which means that I can return it in case I’m not satisfied, whatever my reason is.

Some dried raspberries were crushed but I didn’t use it as a reason – hey, they actually tasted good sprinkled over a steaming bowl of oatmeal!

Buyer's Guide: How To Choose The Best Survival Food

Types of Survival Food

Freeze-dried foods – These are the foods that are frozen until dehydrated and then sucked out of oxygen so that they could last longer. These are the most common type of survival food because you can do it with virtually any food there is, even meaty sauces.

Heat/Sun-dried foods – As opposed to the freeze-dried ones, these are the foods that were exposed to the heat of the sun until dehydrated. They may have also been dehydrated in the oven. Compared to the freeze-dried ones, these foods are usually crispier and are fruits and vegetables most of the time.

Supplements – These usually come in the form of tablets. They may not be the proper food we’re all used to, but well-made tablets can give you the kick of vitamins, minerals, and calories that are comparable to the amount you get from real foods.

How to make survival food last longer?

You definitely can’t get your survival food, store it in the humid back of your truck, exposed to everyday sunlight and heat from the engine, and open it up years later expecting it to taste wonderful and fresh.

Keeping and storing survival foods also comes with responsibilities. Here are the most important things you need to remember so you can keep your emergency stocks fresh and tasty even after years of storage.

Keep them in a cool, dry place away from the sun – Some people tend to store their emergency supplies in the back of the car as it’s pretty logical to do so. They’re always ready wherever fate may take you. But what you may not realize is the heat from the engine (if it’s stored close to it) may ruin the quality of your food and spoil it.

If you really have to put it in the car, make sure to at least encase it in an insulated box, bag, or the like.

The same goes with storage at home. Make sure that it’s kept away from moisture and heat.

Observe proper repacking and storage – Some food kits come with big servings, we get it. That’s why once you have the food in your hands, it’s now your responsibility to keep it safe and unspoiled for the family.

You can put a label in a pouch that has been opened so you’d know how long it’s been left open and you can dispose of it if needed.

Powders can be stored in an airtight container and away from moisture, as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1: How do you store survival food?

A - Make sure to store them away from sunlight, heat, and moisture.

Question 2: What foods have the longest shelf life?

A - Among all the survival food that we’ve tried and tested, Mountain House doesn’t only have the best-established name and quality but also longest shelf life of 30 years, backed by 30-year guarantee.

Question 3: How much food do you need?

A - If we’re talking about survival, you’d want to count the calories and not the amount of food. Men need an average of 2,500 per day to be able to work while women need an average of 2,000 every day.
