It has a stand that allows you to put it on the floor and holes at the back so that you can also mount it on a wall, which we prefer, as it prevents the chickens from possibly knocking it down when they’re flapping around.

We love using this heater to prevent frostbite on our chickens’ combs during cold weather. Once, during last winter, the temperature outside dropped to below freezing point for several weeks, but this heater brought the temperature in the coop up to around the 20s, keeping our chickens warm and toasty and bright-eyed in the morning. 

Besides all that… 

Our Editor’s Choice has a built-in thermostat to keep it from overheating and a high and low selection switch. It also comes with an electric cord that’s covered in a metal coil and is durable enough to withstand the constant pecking of your chickens. 

There are some things you have to keep in mind, though… 

This heater isn’t designed to heat an entire area, only the chickens that are close to it, so if you’re looking for something to raise the temperature of your entire coop, this may not be for you.

The front part does get a bit warm to the touch, but not enough to burn your hand.

If you want something that’s more on the budget-friendly side, the K&H Pet Products Thermo-Peep Heated Pad could be very well what you’re looking for. 

This heating pad is made from durable and peck-resistant ABS plastic material and has rounded edges that make it ideal for baby chicks, but it can also be used to warm chickens of all ages. We were able to fit six chicks in it, no problem.

It’s super easy to use; just plug it, let your chickens lay on it, and wait about 20 minutes for it to get warm. The electric cord is quite long, 5.5 feet in length, with 18 inches of it wrapped in steel for protection, which is a nice little detail. 

The heating pad is thermostatically controlled, with an internal thermostat that’s been pre-set to the ideal temperature required to make sure your freshly hatched chicks get their much-needed warmth. 

The good thing about this heating pad is that it never got too hot, just perfectly warm enough for our brood. It’s very energy-efficient at only 25 watts, so we can leave it plugged in all day and not worry about the electricity bill. We did put a few pine shavings on top for extra insulation.  

Moreover…

It has pre-drilled holes in each corner, giving you the option to mount it on the side of your chicken coop or nesting box, horizontally or vertically. This heated pad is easy to clean, we just used some warm water mixed with mild detergent and wiped it clean with a damp sponge or towel, and it was good as new! 

It’s versatile, too, and can be used indoors or outdoors. It’s perfectly safe, is MET Safety Listed, and exceeds USA/CA electrical safety standards— no need to worry about any serious fire hazard. 

Considering all of the above and the very affordable price, it gets our Best Value award. 

That being said… 

We wish that the heat was a bit more adjustable. It wasn’t really an issue for us, as we just moved aside the wood shavings if our chicks needed more warmth or we could simply take them out of the pad completely if they get too hot, but one or two heat settings would definitely improve the product.

For anyone who likes more heat customizability and control for their chicken coop, the De’Longhi DeLonghi TRD40615E Full Room Radiant Heater is something we highly recommend.

There are safety features, as well— the cut-off feature works to automatically shut off the heating unit once it’s beginning to overheat, which gives us peace of mind, especially at night. We love that we don’t have to worry about our chickens getting too hot or too cold with this heater inside the coop! It’s perfect for our small and medium-sized coops.

However, here’s the thing…  

There was a noticeable noise and smell when we first got the unit. The noise was like a popping noise, which was present within about five minutes of turning on the heater. After that, though, it’s completely silent, to the point that we sometimes forget it’s inside our chicken coop; we will just remember it once we get outside and the comfortable warmth is gone. 

As for the smell, we suggest taking off the plastic label stickers from the unit, and to make sure there’s no foam underneath that’s left from the packaging. We got rid of all of those, and the problem with the chemical smell was gone.

Our Top Pick is not the most low-priced item on our list, but considering all the bells and whistles and its safety features, we think that the price is still very much reasonable.

Still…

It sometimes gets a bit warm to the touch, so carrying handles would’ve been nice. This heater also doesn’t warm up the chicken coop instantaneously, as it doesn’t have an internal fan, but we already expect that of an oil-filled heater. 

Besides, the absence of an internal fan makes it incredibly quiet, and we don’t have to worry about any annoying noise that could disturb our sleeping brood.

The Sweeter Heater Safe Heater For Chicks, Coops, And Animals is an excellent choice if you prefer infrared heaters for our coop.

This heater is durable and pretty much indestructible. It’s fully sealed, so there’s never any dust build-up, which is nice. 

We live in an area where the temperature could drop to -40 degrees, so most of the time, it’s not enough to just insulate our coop— this has been such a lifesaver for our chicks. It doesn’t get hot but takes off the chill effectively, usually creating a 10-15 degree difference between the temperature inside the coop and outside.

It radiates a nice, soft warmth that our brood of baby chicks love, and it doesn’t shock them when they have to be out in the cold. We like that it doesn’t emit any light or sound; as a result, our chicks are very calm and quiet the whole night.

We hang it above our 70 chicks, and we like that we can easily adjust it according to their comfort level. We observe them, and if they huddle together, that usually means they need more warmth, so we lower the heater a little bit. If they’re moving away, then that means they’re getting too hot, and we simply raise it a few inches.

Besides that… 

This heater is a completely safe product. It features a snap action thermostat that automatically turns off the heater in case of a situation where the heat wasn’t allowed to escape, like if it falls into the floor— this feature gives us so much peace of mind, even when we have to leave it unattended for a while.

The fiberglass panel is very easy to clean with a simple wipe of a damp cloth with soapy water. It also comes with hooks and chains and is very easy to hang up.  

Here’s the catch…

Upon getting the product, we definitely noticed a fiberglass smell, but you can make it go away by plugging it in a few days prior to using it in your coop.

It’s also quite expensive, but sometimes you do get what you paid for, as this is a very well-made product. It doesn’t cost much to operate and uses little power, pulling only about 50 watts, so you won’t have to spend much after investing in this. 

Overall, this is a worthwhile investment if you want something that will make you rest easily at night.

The K&H Pet Products Thermo-Chicken Heated Perch is an awesome heater for ensuring that our chickens’ feet stay warm, especially in sub-zero temperatures. 

It’s thermostatically controlled, with dual internal thermostats that effectively regulate the perch’s temperature to ensure it stays in the ideal range. Another benefit is that we don’t have to keep plugging it in and unplugging it, as it automatically runs when the temperature drops to below-freezing level.

This heated perch uses a unique technology that uses the chickens’ own circulation system to help them retain body heat— it warms their feet, and that warmth spreads throughout their bodies. We never have to worry again about them getting frozen toes since getting this product.

And we noticed better egg production too! 

Also…

It’s very sturdy and well-built, so we can rest easy knowing our chickens will stay comfortably perched on it. It uses only 55 watts, so it’s energy-efficient and doesn’t increase our electricity bill.  

No need to worry about safety, as it doesn’t produce enough heat to start a fire. As with the other K&H product on our list, it has also been tested and certified by MET Labs and is guaranteed safe. 

However… 

This is a nitpick, but the cord it comes with could be a bit longer. The perch itself could be a bit wider too, but our chickens seem to not have any issues with it.

We think the power cord is a bit thin, and the included plastic cover could be sturdier, it feels a bit flimsy, but they don’t affect the quality of this great brooding plate anyway. 

This product is not recommended for adult chickens, so keep that in mind before getting it.
