Let’s get to it!

Introduction

Deers are pretty and agile creatures. They can run from predators, and they can fend off for themselves. That’s why you need a deer feeder!

If you’re a hunter, a feeding spot will attract a mob to a single place. Then your hunt will be easier. But if you’re a deer farmer or you simply feel charitable toward them, you also need the convenience of a feeder.

With this equipment…

The only work you need to do is fill the bucket and wait for the next time you have to do it again.

Some feeders have timers that will allow only a certain amount of feed at a time. Others have spinner plates that would scatter the feed so the animals won’t have to fight for a chance at the feeding spout.

Because of these variations…

It’s not that easy to know what feeder would work best for you. So we took it upon ourselves to buy the feeders we could find on the market and test their field performances.

The Bottom Line:

Deer feeding has never been as convenient as Moultrie Spincast and its unique and efficient features!

Pros

  • Durable material and sturdy build
  • Automated
  • Includes batteries
  • Quick-lock system
  • Includes external power port
  • Includes feed level estimator

Cons

  • Relatively expensive

Summary

SUMMARY:

The Moultrie Spincast tripod feeder comes with a digital timer, spin plate, feed level estimator, and four AA batteries. You can fill it up with up to 200 pounds of feed, which is a bit low for the price. But its other qualities made it our Editor’s Choice.

Namely…

Its container is made of high-quality plastic, and the legs are sturdy metal. It can brave strong winds and mild storms. Even the deer themselves won’t be able to knock this feeder off the ground!

When it comes to the spinner, we have only one complaint. It’s durable, yes, but its spread is kind of lopsided. There’s a part where it can throw feed at a good distance, while the feed lands too near on the other side.

Despite that…

Moultrie is highly recommendable! Its automated digital system and quick-lock system make its assembly, set up, and operation super easy. Even if it’s your first time using it, you’ll easily navigate through it.

You may set it to disperse feed up to four times a day. And each time can last up to 20 seconds.

Once set up…

You can leave it there until the feed – and the battery – runs out. Just connect it to an external power source through its built-in port if you want it to last longer.

And if you’re the type that’s always concerned about how much feed is still there, Moultrie is for you! Its feed level estimator will show you without opening the lid or knocking on the container.

Overall…

Moultrie Spincast is justified for its relatively high price. You can’t put a price on its efficiency and convenience, right? Besides, it will last on the field long enough!

Overall Score:

90

The Bottom Line:

If an affordable fix is what you’re looking for, look no further than Moultrie’s All-In-One timer and spinner kit.

Pros

  • Super affordable
  • Durable and sturdy overall build
  • Easy to set up and operate
  • Fits any bucket size or type
  • Power-efficient
  • Includes port for an external power source or solan panels

Cons

  • The spinner is less durable
  • The spinner’s throw distance is not that far

Summary

If you need your timer or spinner plate or both replaced, here’s an affordable product for you.

We can’t compare its price with complete feeders in this list because it’s just a timer and spinner kit. There’s no feed container or suspension system. But compared to other kits, Moultrie All-In-One is one of the cheapest.

Still…

Its durability and consistency exceed that of others – even the expensive brands! That’s why it’s our Best Value awardee.

Whatever brand of feeder you’re planning to buy – or whatever you have with you – don’t worry! We assure you Moultrie All-In-One will fit! We’ve tried as many feeders as we could find for this article, and none of them have any problems with this timer kit.

Also…

It’s made of durable plastic and metal materials. Its overall build is sturdy enough to withstand rugged conditions.

But you need to be more careful with the spinner. It’s the first one that would give in. And we hoped it could disperse feed further than a few yards. We still had to scatter feed manually to beckon the deer with this.

But that’s a small inconvenience especially if the deer in your area are already used to where you’ve set up your feeder.

And speaking of set up…

There’s nothing easier than this timer kit! We didn’t experience any mounting or operating problems. After a few clicks, you’ll be able to set this kit to up to four feeding times a day at 1-20 seconds.

And you can just leave it there! You’ll have to refill the feed, but its battery can last up to four months of continuous use. After that, you can recharge the batteries either by an external electrical power source or a solar panel.

See?

You can’t get more features than that for the same cheap price!

Overall Score:

92

The Bottom Line:

Assembling automatic feeders doesn’t have to be complicated – and Wildgame Innovations proves that!

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Quick assembly and operation
  • Good spinner dispersion distance
  • Power-efficient
  • High weight capacity for the price

Cons

  • Doesn’t include batteries
  • Less sturdy compared to other feeders

Summary

An automatic feeder should make life easier instead of the other way around. Yet some manufacturers still manage to make them complicated. Not Wildgame Innovations, though!

Why is that?

Wildgame Innovations’ tripod feeder is our Top Pick product because of how easy you can assemble it and get it running.

If you’re a beginner, maybe it’ll take you 20 minutes. But we set it up in less than 15! And that includes the timer.

However…

We noticed a tiny design flaw. One of its legs is shorter than the others, so our setup wasn’t balanced at first. Luckily, we saw it before we filled the bucket up, or it would’ve punctured the container.

After the adjustments, the feeder worked perfectly fine. It’s lighter and looks flimsier than other expensive brands. But for the price, it’s surprisingly sturdy.

Plus…

Its spinner works so well! The feed scattered evenly and up to several yards, so we didn’t have to tease the deer manually.

And for the price, it has a satisfactory weight capacity – you can load to a maximum of 225 pounds of feed. Then, you can set the digital timer to up to four feeding times a day for 5, 10, 15, or 20 seconds.

Once done…

You wait. Yes, that’s it, and don’t worry about its power consumption. Wildgame Innovations doesn’t come with batteries, but any 6V batteries can work. That won’t run out for months of continuous use.

You can recharge it through an electrical source or its solar panel connectors when it does run out. Whatever you choose, you’ll get satisfactory results from this affordable product.

You can rely on Banks Outdoors gravity feeder to feed your deer under any weather condition!

Pros

  • Durable and sturdy overall build
  • Easily mounted
  • Efficient design
  • Weather-resistant

Cons

  • Relatively expensive
  • Small size and weight capacity
  • Too lightweight

Summary

Banks Outdoors brings us a small and light gravity feeder. But it will hold through rugged conditions. There’s no need to worry about the unpredictable weather. Rain or shine, it will feed your deer!

But that’s not all…

Since this feeder isn’t automated, it will need no complicated settings. You simply have to mount it on a tree or a pole and let the feeding ports bring food to the deer.

Be sure to nail it safe and secure because the bucket itself is light. Strong winds might blow it off. But it will secure food like other deer feeders.

In about a week or so, you’ll have to beckon the deer over to the feeding spot manually. It’s not heavy-duty work, but that can be a chore. And another chore is having to refill the feed too often because it can only hold up to 40 pounds.

But…

It’s designed to dispense only a certain amount of feed at a time. Based on our experience, there was little to no waste or spill at all! So the refill rate would depend on how much the animals can consume the feed.

So, if you’re looking for something simple yet durable, Banks Outdoors’ gravity feeder is a great choice!

The Bottom Line:

Redneck Outdoors is one of the most affordable and reliable gravity deer feeders you’ll find on the market!

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Durable overall build
  • Easily set up
  • Feed-efficient design
  • Weather-resistant

Cons

  • The lid isn’t durable
  • Medium capacity

Summary

Redneck Outdoors gives us this gravity deer feeder that’s almost just the same as others. But it has impressive qualities that we didn’t expect from an affordable feeder!

First of all…

It’s made of durable plastic that would survive any weather condition. Ours went through rain, storm, and the scorching sun. But it remained intact.

There’s just the matter of the lid. It’s not as durable as the rest of the bucket. It’s slightly lighter, so it tends to fly off when the wind is strong. But it’s nothing that a simple lock of your choice won’t fix.

Besides that…

It’s designed to efficiently control how much feed goes to the feeding port at a time.

So, even if you’re not satisfied with only 80 pounds of weight capacity – you’ll still love how this feeder saves feed from spilling like automatic feeders with a digital timer.

Plus…

You can buy it a ratchet strap so you can mount it on a tree. Or simply mount it on a T-post. Either way, you’ll get the best results – it stays mounted and attracts deer.

The only thing left to do is wait for games and hunt!

Manufacturer – Moultrie

Overall Score:

86

The Bottom Line:

Moultrie Pro-Magnum has more features than your average feeder, but it’s surprisingly easy to set up!

Pros

  • Includes digital timer, battery indicator, varmint guard, funnel, and other features
  • Large LCD frame
  • Durable metal frame
  • Easy to assemble and set up
  • Mounts any type of feed bucket

Cons

  • Relatively expensive
  • High power consumption
  • Not weather-proof

Summary

Moultrie Pro-Magnum costs almost like a complete automatic feeder set. So it’s more expensive compared to other feeder kits on the market. But for good reasons…

What are those reasons?

Well, some feeders have just one or two special features. But Pro-Magnum has almost all of it! This kit has a diamond-shaped spin plate, varmint guard, and funnel. It also comes with a digital timer, battery indicator, and feed level estimator.

Its built-in varmint guard successfully keeps it safe from raccoons, squirrels, and other animals that compete with the deer for food.

Not to mention…

It’s built with high-quality steel materials, making it a sturdy and durable feeder kit. The only downside is that it’s not ideal in areas where it rains because the electronic parts are not secure enough.

And since there are more electronic parts than other automatic deer feeders we’ve tried, it consumes more power too. Its batteries don’t last as long.

Good thing…

There’s an external power port to connect the feeder kit to an external source. You may opt for an electric outlet or a solar panel – both will work well.

Yes, all of those are in one package!

And the best thing…

… is that Pro-Magnum is super easy to set up! You can mount any container you have because its funnel is designed for versatility. And don’t be intimidated by the digital displays. Even beginners can quickly navigate through them.

So, all in all, Moultrie Pro-Magnum will be a great purchase!

Overall Score:

The Bottom Line:

Texas Hunter’s Stand and Fill feeder brings high-capacity and convenient feeding to the field!

Pros

  • Pre-wired for solar charger
  • High weight capacity
  • Includes varmint guard, legs, foot pads, and pegs for stabilizing
  • Great for heavy-duty feeding
  • Sturdy design and overall build
  • Easy to assemble, set up, and operate

Cons

  • Very expensive
  • Not water-proof
  • The lid doesn’t have a hinge or lock
  • Heavy

Summary

If you’re a generous feeder or just have a lot of deer to feed, we recommend the Texas Hunter Stand and Fill automatic deer feeder.

It has a 300-pound feed capacity, and you can set the timer to release feed up to nine times a day to a maximum of 60 seconds each! The animals would surely eat to their hearts’ content.

Aside from that…

Stand and Fill’s design speaks of convenience. Because of its high weight capacity, you won’t need a refill too often. And you don’t have to go to the feeder now and then either just to check if there’s anything left.

On one side of the bucket, there’s a window – a feed level sight gauge – so you can see its contents even from a distance.

Plus…

The overall durability and sturdiness of this feeder are very reliable. It might encounter bears or other huge animals, but it would stay put. You can use the stabilizing pegs on the legs’ footpads that come with the package. They’re all made of high-quality metal!

However, we were unimpressed by the lid of this feeder. For its expensive price, it should be more secure, so strong winds won’t be able to blow it off. And rainwater gets in, which isn’t good for the feed. But it’s nothing that a plastic cover can’t fix.

Still…

We highly recommend Stand and Fill. It’s heavier than other feeders – which is the price of durability. But we quickly assembled it in less than 30 minutes. That includes the pegs and filling up the container.

Once set up, it’s also very easy to operate the timer. And then, you can just leave it there and wait for the deer to come!

Texas Hunter knows how to keep deer feeding convenient even in an eight-foot deer feeder!

Pros

  • High-capacity
  • Pre-wired for solar charger
  • Includes varmint guard, legs, footpads, and pegs for stabilizing
  • Great for heavy-duty feeding
  • Sturdy design and overall build
  • Easy to assemble, set up, and operate

Cons

  • Very expensive
  • Not water-proof
  • The lid doesn’t have a hinge or lock
  • Heavy

Summary

This model’s only difference from Stand and Fill is its height. Wildlife & Deer Feeder can rise to eight feet tall instead of four. Other than that, it has the same features and specs. And it also has the same flaws.

As mentioned before…

Wildlife & Deer Feeder has four extendable legs with footpads and stabilizing stakes. It also has a digital timer, varmint guard, and a feed-level sight gauge.

With all those features, you may just forget how expensive it is.

Especially…

Once you experience how convenient this feeder is, you’re going to love it as we did! It holds up to 300 pounds, so there’s no need to refill often. But if you have a lot of deer to feed, you can set the timer to up to nine times a day for up to one minute.

There’s still the matter of the lid that doesn’t have hinges and isn’t water-proof. But overall, it’s durable and sturdy. It won’t fall off even if huge animals try to knock it out. And it’s safe from thieving squirrels or raccoons.

On top of that…

You can get it up and running in no time at all! Extra care is needed when you adjust the legs to their full height as it becomes less balanced. But once it’s set up, you can sit back and relax.

This Moultrie hunting feeder will keep on running thanks to its compatibility with solar panels!

Pros

  • Relatively affordable
  • Includes batteries and port for external power source
  • Quick-lock system
  • Easy setup and operation
  • Durable overall build
  • Weather-proof

Cons

  • Medium capacity
  • The legs dig into soft ground
  • No clear and instructive manual for solar panels
  • No additional features

Summary

There’s no unique or special feature in this Moultrie hunting feeder. But we expected as much from a relatively affordable purchase.

What we didn’t expect…… was how this game feeder is so compatible with solar panels that it lasted longer than most of the feeders we’ve tried. We had a hard time connecting it at first because there wasn’t a manual in the package.

But we found our way, which was to simply clip the connector to the battery to charge it. It doesn’t require anything more complicated than that!

So…

It was really easy to set up. Once planted on the ground, you can set the timer to one to four feeding times a day. And that’s it! All you have to do is wait.

But you’ll have to check in from time to time because there’s no battery or feed level gauge. Since it accommodates only up to 250 pounds of feed, your visits are going to be more often.

And in one of our visits, we noticed that the legs dug into the soft after-rain ground because it was a bit sharp. We had to screw flat footpads into them. Beyond that, we didn’t encounter any more problems.

In fact…

This is a durable game feeder that can withstand rugged conditions. With unpredictable weather, you’re going to need this reliable tool to keep the deer fed.

Overall Score:

The Bottom Line:

The Capsule game feeder will sit snugly on the ground and keep the feed secure while the deer – and no other animals – can enjoy it!

Pros

  • Includes batteries and solar panel for recharging
  • High weight capacity
  • Durable, weather-proof, and rust-resistant material
  • Secure and innovative design
  • No assembly required
  • Easy to set up

Cons

  • Very expensive
  • The solar panel is not secured as the rest of the feeder
  • No additional features

Summary

When it comes to security, Capsule Feeders have an all-metal housing, barrel spin plate, varmint guard – the works! So it’s safe from thieving animals, big and small alike. And it’s made of high-quality aluminum that doesn’t rust easily.

It’s also safe from heavy rains or strong winds. Since it sits snugly on the ground, Capsule Feeders won’t wobble or topple over under extreme weather conditions.

Only…

The feed might be safe, but the timer and solar panel don’t have the same protection. But you can cover it with a plastic material that’s probably lying around in your garage. That’s about the only complaint we have on this feeder’s setup.

Without requiring legs, straps, or poles, assembling this feeder and making it operational is a one-person, 15-minute job. Not to mention how easy it is to set the timer! The only downside is that it’s too heavy.

Overall…

You can have a lot from this purchase, even if it’s a bit expensive. There are no gauges or other additional features. But the security it offers is a steal in itself!

Why Trust Us?

We did the expensive and tiring job of trying these feeders, so you don’t have to. And the results are better than we expected!

First…

We assembled the feeders and noted which ones were the easiest. That includes setting it up on the field until it’s up and running.

We tried the test mode and then the real deal for those with automatic timers.

After that…

We kept using the feeders for weeks. The best ones are still standing tall and functioning even now. And here they are, in this top ten list!

Each score and detailed description came from our experience. But don’t take our word for it… You can experience it for yourself!

Buyers Guide: How To Choose The Best Deer Feeder…

1 – What are the different types of Deer Feeders:

  • Hanging deer feeder – hanging feeders are suspended from a high spot
  • Gravity feeder – gravity feeders makes use of gravity to disperse deer feed
  • Tripod feeders – tripod deer feeders are set up in the field using three sturdy legs to suspend the feed container
  • Automatic deer feeder – automatic deer feeders have digital timers and motors that you can set up to automatically disperse deer feed

  • Hanging deer feeders should have different mounting options.
  • Gravity feeders should be designed for a controlled feed flow.
  • Feed level gauges eliminate the unnecessary visits to your feeding spots to check if there’s still feed inside.
  • Digital timer programs are common, and the best ones are power-efficient ones.
  1. Deer feeders and specifications explained:

Deer or game feeders are tools installed in feeding spots to feed deer. The main purpose is to attract a herd to a certain spot to control the population, hunt, or watch wildlife.

  • Time programs – you can program an automatic deer feeder to feed deer a different number of times a day and for different durations.
  • External power – automated feeders need a power source for the timers to work.
  • Material – this will give you a clue about the feeder’s durability and sturdiness.
  • Weight – the amount of feed (in pounds) that the feeder can hold.

4 – These are things to consider:

  •  Different feeder types have different features to look for.
  • Tripod feeders are less balanced than ones with four legs, but they’re easier to assemble and more common on the market.
  • When using a spin plate, feed covers a larger area than preferred for hunting. There are more chances of winning a prize when they’re huddled closer together.

5 – Best deer feeders top tips:

  • Varmint guards will protect your feed supply from thieving small animals, while it’s the feeder’s durable build that protects it from larger ones.
  • A good bucket lid makes all the difference as it protects the feed from heat and rain.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Q – Where should I place a deer feeder?

A – Find a spot in the field where there’s a bed and water for the deer. The only thing missing then would be the food, which is why you’re going to put your deer feeder there. Most likely, it’s on trenches, ditches, creek beds, and other low spots of the terrain.

Q – How do I attract deer to a deer feeder?

A – You need to scatter feed at a distance around the feeder. Then, gradually lessen that distance until the feed is right under the feeder. When the deer can consistently locate it, you can start giving them food through the feeder. But a spin feeder does this job for you.

Q – What time should I set the deer feeder?

A – Sunrise and sunset are the best feeding times in open fields because the deer tend to come out at those times. But in woody areas where they have lots of hiding places, you should set your timer longer.

Round-Up

Now, you’ve seen our qualitative observations about each feeder. And their overall scores would help you find what’s generally the best.

But… Don’t miss out on their metric scores! In the next section, you’ll find which feeders are the best in each metric. If you think a particular one is most important, these rankings will help you decide on your purchase!

Our Analysis, Comparisons & Test Results

1 – Value for Money

Feeder prices are varied because there are different types. That’s why we didn’t just compare the figures when we judged these products with regards to the Value for Money metric.

But…

We had expectations based on their prices. There were expensive ones with extra features that we didn’t see in the affordable feeders. However, the cheap ones are often the best when it comes to the basics.

They were reliable, durable, and easy to assemble or install. So our Best Value  Moultrie All-In-One and Top Pick Wildgame Innovations got perfect marks!

2 – Ease of Use

What good is a high-quality deer feeder if you can’t get it running at its best condition? With that in mind, we deemed this metric important.

High scorers are those that are simple but useful. There are no complicated setup or calibration systems, and most preferably, no manual needed.

As you can see…

Banks Outdoors and Redneck Outdoors have perfect scores. They’re gravity feeders, so it’s a given that there’d be no buttons to press or digital systems to set.

But our Editor’s Choice Moultrie Spincast is also user-friendly despite being automated with extra features.

But all-in-all…

The feeders in this list are the easiest to use of all the feeders we found on the market!

3 – Setup/Assembly

Most feeders – even the automated ones – are no rocket science. They’re generally made for convenience. But some of them have design flaws that make it hard to balance them on the ground, hand them, or mount their parts securely.

That’s why we have the Setup/Assembly metric. Here, we observed the ease of assembly and installation and the overall build of the feeder.

And in conclusion…

Our award winners – Moultrie Spincast, Moultrie All-In-One, and Wildgame Innovations – and Banks Outdoors are the simplest and easiest to set up.

4 – Weight Capacity

We realized that weight capacity is a huge factor of convenience and indicator of durability. That’s why we listed it as one of the metrics. But here, we also considered how much we paid for the feeder.

High scorers in this metric are those that are durabe enough to hold heavy loads. Consequently, you won’t have to frequently visit your feeding spot for refills.

And…

The Stand and Fill, Wildlife, and Capsule feeders are the ones that have the best capacity for their prices and sizes.

5 – Design

The Design metric is where we considered the appearance and functionality of the feeders’ features. Add-ons are big factors. But it’s how useful those extras are that we deemed the most important.

Hence…Editor’s Choice Moultrie Spincast towered over the others in this metric because of its simple yet useful features.

Our Final Verdict: Best Deer Feeder

There you have it!

Moultrie Spincast excelled in a lot of metrics compared to other deer feeders. It’s easy to assemble and use, and its overall design is durable and functional. That’s why it’s our Editor’s Choice!

But don’t forget how affordable our Best Value Moultrie All-in-One and Top Pick Wildgame Innovations are. But they’re still of great quality that topped our charts.

Overall…

The rest of the products in this top ten list are excellent. They’ll give you your money’s worth, and maybe even more!
