- Manufacturer: EST Gear
- Material: Aluminum and carbon steel
- Size: 10 x 6 x 2 inches
- Weight: 3 lbs
- Foldable: Yes
Bottom Line: EST Gear has succeeded in packing a full, durable survival gear in one compact and light shovel.
Pros
- Compact and lightweight
- Collapsible
- Has 18 functions and features
- Durable overall build
- Made of reliable materials
- Comes with a durable nylon pouch
- Comfortable grip
Cons
- More expensive than others on this list
- Hard to disassemble
SUMMARY:
The overall construction quality of this shovel is impeccable. And we didn’t expect less because of the price. You might need to break the bank for this one but it’s all going to be worth it.
Let’s start with its 18 features.
You buy a shovel, you get a saw, spear, axe, knife, hoe, trowel, fire starter, bottle opener, hex wrenches, screwdriver, whistle, compass, ice pick, nail extractor, hook, ruler, rope and wire cutter, and waterproof storage for matches and other supplies.
Go ahead and count that! And you can also bend the head to about 90 degrees for when you need to dig trenches.
Check out the shovelhead too. You’ll find it’s not a normal spade. It has a sharp edge, a serrated edge, and hooks and holes. Those are specifically designed for maximum functionality.
But even more importantly, all of those are only 3 lbs. And you can disassemble the shovel to fit in a nylon pouch. That’s a lot of value in one compact package.
Plus…
Aluminum and carbon steel are two of the best materials used for essential tools. Carbon steel is very durable and sturdy while aluminum is corrosion-resistant.
Rest assured, this shovel is not going to break that easily. And that quality is consistent with every part of this product – including the nylon pouch.
But just a heads up…
Once you’ve assembled it, it’s a bit hard to collapse. It took us some practice, but once we got the hang of it there were no other issues.
Anyway, the whole shovel length is just 3 feet. And you need it like that while at camp.
That’s why this is one of the best survival shovels we can recommend.
It won our Editor’s Choice award because it gave us way more than we bargained for. That’s saying much because at first, we thought this was an expensive shovel.
But if you combine the individual value of each function that this shovel has, you’d be willing to pay more!

- Manufacturer: Cold Steel
- Material: Hardwood and carbon steel
- Size: 11.88 x 4.5 x 1.13 inches
- Weight: 1.66 lbs
- Foldable: Yes
Bottom Line: Get this durable and portable folding shovel that doubles as an axe for the most affordable price.
Pros
- Very affordable
- Adequately sharp edge
- Durable shovel head
- Excellent anti-rust coating
- Multi-purpose
- Compact and lightweight
- Comfortable grip
Cons
- The handle is less durable
- Poor edge retention
- Limited functions
SUMMARY:
The Cold Steel Special Forces’ entire shovel length is about 20 inches. And at first glance, you’ll think it’s just a shovel. And when you see the price, you really won’t expect that much from it.
But then, after we tried the shovel out, it won our Best Value Award!
Unlike other survival shovels on this list…
This product doesn’t have too many extras. You’ll get a carbon steel shovel blade, a wooden handle, and a nice and sharp axe.
But what’s impressive is its durable and well-polished overall build. With so low a price and so light a tool, we were pretty surprised how sturdy it was.
You need to be more careful with the handle since it’s made of wood, but it’s very comfortable to grip.
As for the shovel head…
Carbon steel is a reliable material in terms of hardness and toughness. So we kind of expected the head to endure all the shoveling, cutting, and splitting we did.
It was the anti-corrosion coating that caught our attention. It didn’t come off easily even while we used the shovel as an axe.
Although, there was a bit of bending at the edge part. We noticed it after throwing it like an axe to a tree trunk. But we quickly fixed the bend with a little heat and a mallet.
Overall…
From shovel head to the sheath, this is one of the best folding shovels we can recommend – especially if you’re on a budget!

- Manufacturer: FiveJoy
- Material: High carbon steel and aluminum
- Size: 10.67 x 8.15 x 2.72 inches
- Weight: 2.16 lbs
- Foldable: Yes
Bottom Line: Your complete survival gear, now in one lightweight and an affordable folding shovel.
Pros
- Affordable
- It has 16 functions
- Military-grade
- Made of durable materials
- Corrosion-resistant
Cons
- It has inconsistencies in durability
- Poor edge retention
SUMMARY:
You can set a survival shovel apart from a camp shovel by the additional features that were specially designed for emergencies.
For example…
A knife for self-defense, a paracord rope with inner strands that you can use for suturing wounds, a wire cutter that can cut through up to an 8-gauge wire, fire starter, whistle, ice breaker, and others.
And this FiveJoy military shovel has it all!
Also, it has a shovel blade that you can bend into a hook or a hoe. The spade has a serrated edge so it can also be a saw. There’s also a bottle opener, fish scaler, rope cutter, a 6-cm measuring device, can opener, and a hammer.
That’s all the stuff that you buy camping shovels for.
FiveJoy shovel is our Top Pick because…
It has all the camping functions and survival functions that we didn’t see in other brands.
And it’s packed in one convenient folding shovel. It’s only about 10 inches in collapsed length and a little bit over 2 lbs in weight.
And did we mention it’s military-grade?
Like with the others made of high carbon steel and aluminum, we had high expectations with this shovel. That is, in terms of durability. And we weren’t disappointed by FiveJoy.
Every tool and part of this package endured the tests they went through. There was chopping some saplings and firewood, cutting ropes, skinning game and scaling some catch, etc.
The only issue we encountered was the edge of the shovel blade. It dulled out after a few uses. Good thing, one of us thought to bring a sharpening stone.
But besides that…
We had no other complaints. You surely can’t go wrong with an affordable yet high-quality shovel like this!

- Manufacturer: SOG Specialty Knives & Tools

Bottom Line: This shovel folds into a third of its full length for maximum portability and convenience.
Pros
- Compact and lightweight
- Very affordable
- Multi-functional
- You can fully rotate the shovel blade
Cons
- Limited features
- Less durable than others on the list
SUMMARY:
We’d describe this product as a bushcraft shovel rather than survival. After all, it only has a blade with a serrated edge that can double as an axe. There’s no paracord, knife, or compass with this SOG folding shovel.
But don’t judge it too quickly!
There’s a lot to love about this item.
You’ll find it very useful as a shovel, a hoe, and an entrenching tool. Just rotate the spade to the angle that you need. And it’s so sharp that it makes cutting wood look easy. We didn’t have to hone it very often, either.
We were just a bit disappointed with its durability – or the lack thereof. You can’t blame us for expecting much from carbon steel, right? But this one bent when we dug on hard soil.
But then again, it’s a cheap product. If you consider how little you’ll pay for it, you’ll be surprised how much value you’ll get from it.
So overall…
We recommend this SOG folding survival shovel. It has more uses than you can buy from a few bucks and it’s sturdy enough.
Plus, carrying it is no trouble at all. Its 3-way fold makes it so compact that you can just shove it into a tiny space in your bug-out bag and feel like it’s nothing!

10
- Manufacturer: BAALAND
- Material: Alloy steel and high carbon steel
- Size: 12.4 x 7.83 x 3.54 inches
- Weight: 5.11 lbs
- Foldable: Yes
Bottom Line: You can trust a high carbon steel tool to do the job well - just like this folding shovel from BAALAND.
Pros
- Made of reliable materials
- It has many extra features
- Durable overall build
- It comes with a multi-functional flashlight
- Compact when collapsed
- Affordable
Cons
- Heavy
- Inconsistent quality with extra parts
- Sharp parts have poor edge retention
SUMMARY:
The shovel itself has a lot of functions. It can be a hoe, axe, saw, and entrenching tool.
And if you disassemble the handle, you’ll find a rescue knife, harpoon, hammer, bow, nail puller, hex spanner, glass and ice breaker, rope, emergency whistle, hemostatic hose, and a fire stick.
But it doesn’t end there.
There’s also a flashlight. And that can be your rescue or camp light, and power bank. That’s right – the package comes with a USB connector for charging your phone and other gadgets!
We didn’t expect that last item from such an affordable product.
There are a few issues, of course.
With so much packed in one pouch, it ought to be heavy, right? And it is if you compare it with other brands. But since there’s a lot of stuff in there, you won’t have to add more tools to your bag. So that’s fine.
What bothered us was that some of the extra features weren’t as durable as the shovel itself.
The flashlight wasn’t as bright as we wanted it to be. The rope and the handle were a bit brittle too. And the sharp parts needed honing every so often.
But you can overlook those cons because of the pros.
Specifically, the high carbon steel material that most of this shovel was made of. It’s one of the toughest that we’ve seen while on the lookout for a great survival shovel.
The head of this shovel endured all the splitting and digging that we did. Some of us had the chance to shovel some snow with it. Then we dug a fire pit too on one of our summer trips. And the knife could cut and scale like the expensive ones that we have.
So overall, BAALAND got it right with their tactical shovels!

- Manufacturer: Schrade
- Material: Polypropylene and stainless steel
- Size: 3 x 3 x 3 inches
- Weight: 2.4 lbs
- Foldable: Yes
Bottom Line: Say goodbye to wobbling with Schrade’s nice and secure T-shaped handle.
Pros
- Convenient and secure grip
- Excellent handle quality
- Secure, high-quality sheath
- Affordable
- Sturdy and durable
- Strong handle and head joint
Cons
- No extra features
- Its full length might be too small
SUMMARY:
We’ve seen shovels that don’t break or become dull easily. But some of them disappointed us by being so wobbly.
Most of the time, it’s because the construction has a weak point – the part where the handle and the shovel blade meet.
This product from Schrade has a nice and strong joint.
We conveniently scooped some dirt and carried it around camp as we dug trenches and fire pits. It also helped that the overall construction was so sturdy.
There was no bending or breaking anywhere in the blade and the handle.
You can add to that the excellent grip. The handle is shaped like a T to make it more comfortable to use. That way, your grip will be firmer and you can put more strength in every push and scoop.
But if you’re looking for the extra features…
This isn’t your guy. There’s no knife or whistle or flashlight in the package.
You might also find size an issue. Some of my colleagues and friends thought the blade was too small. But the length expands up to 20 inches so you’ll be able to use it comfortably if you’re tall.
Besides…
This is a high-quality product overall. Plus, it’s a lot more affordable than others on this list – even among all the shovels that we’ve tried but didn’t make it to the top.

- Manufacturer: United Cutlery - Geneva Supply
- Material: Fiberglass-reinforced nylon and stainless steel
- Size: 16.25 x 10.6 x 3.6 inches
- Weight: 0.44 lbs
- Foldable: No
Bottom Line: This survival shovel isn’t a jack-of-all-trades, but surely a master of sharpness and durability.
Pros
- Durable head
- Durable handle
- Sharp blade
- Excellent edge retention
- Comfortable handle
- Super lightweight and compact
- Consistent quality
Cons
- Limited features
- Relatively expensive
- Might be too short for some
SUMMARY:
M48 Kommando didn’t bother putting it all in one package. Maybe they thought you’re going to bring your favorite survival knife, paracord, and other stuff with you anyway.
But we’re not complaining at all…
Because, what this shovel has will be worth your money. Besides, it’s just as military shovels should be – compact, durable, and as light as a feather.
What can you do with this handy tool?
Aside from shoveling and digging, it has a sharp spade for some light chopping. It also has a partially serrated edge that you can use as a saw.
And when we say sharp, we mean sharp.
The head is made of very durable and sturdy stainless steel. It didn’t bend or break even after multiple uses. But what was most impressive was how easily the edge glided through the wood.
And for a little bit of fun, we tried throwing it like a tactical shovel. And it worked!
Not to mention…
This product’s edge retention is impeccable. We didn’t have to sharpen it often and it was quite easy to do so.
And the handle is sturdy too. It’s designed for comfort and convenience so it has a very secure grip. We hoped it had a longer handle length, but that’s just us.
So…
Even though it has only a few functions, it’s a bit expensive, and it might be too small. Those were minor cons compared to the pros.
This shovel expertly does what a tactical survival shovel should do.

Bottom Line: Whether short or tall, you can adjust this shovel’s length to fit the whole gang.
Pros
- Affordable
- Lightweight
- Adjustable length
- Secure and comfortable grip
- Wide and secure shovel board
Cons
- No extra features and functions
- Less durable compared to others
SUMMARY:
Here’s another shovel that doesn’t have all the shenanigans of the other brands. Its most special feature is the adjustable length of the handle.
But we still recommend this one!
First of all, it’s super affordable. We bought it with what change we had in our pocket. But the quality of the head exceeded our expectations.
No, it’s not the most durable. And it’s made of aluminum which is generally less sturdy than carbon or stainless steel. But considering the price, this one gave us more value than other more expensive shovels.
And just to be clear…
When we say ‘less durable,’ we don’t mean that it bent and broke at the slightest use. Far from it, actually.
For a shovel’s main purpose – digging, scooping, and carrying – it performed well enough. We tried it with snow, sand, damp camping grounds, and the works. And it endured each test.
Moreover…
The adjustable handle proved very functional. We’re friends with the same interests but not at all the same size.
But all of us were comfortable with this shovel – not to mention how secure the grip is!

- Size: 37.99 x 6.22 x 1.89 inches
- Weight: 4.86 lbs
- Foldable: Yes
Bottom Line: No need to pack more tools - this iunio shovel has your camping gear covered.
Pros
- Has a lot of features and functions
- Durable construction
- Rust-resistant
- Excellent sharpness and edge retention
- Comfortable handle
Cons
- Heavy
- Very expensive
- Weak handle and head joint
SUMMARY:
This is an excellent product from iunio. So why are you only hearing about it lower on the list?
It’s all because of the price. It’s pretty expensive. And although it’s well-deserved, still, we found its best features present in more affordable shovels.
But we highly recommend this one, still.
You can’t pass up an all-in-one package, right? Especially if it’s of consistent durable quality.
With the Iunio tactical shovel, you’ll get a pickaxe, fish scaler, wire saw, compass, ice axe, fire starter, whistle, flashlight, hammer, three extension bars, and tactical waist bag.
So yes, we do think it’s still worth the money.
Also…
The carbon steel parts are rust-resistant. The sharp parts are indeed sharp with excellent edge retention.
We just hoped, for the price, that it didn’t wobble. The joint is a weak point and it significantly reduced the convenience of using this shovel. Plus, it’s a pretty heavy tool.
Good thing, it has a very comfortable grip. So overall, it’s a great product.

Bottom Line: Zune balanced its shovel’s design to bring form and function to your adventure.
Pros
- Very durable and sturdy
- Made of high-quality materials
- Strong handle and head joint
- Has lots of extra features
- Comes with non-slip rubber grips
- Comes with a backpack
Cons
- Super expensive
- The quality is inconsistent in some of the extra features
- Heavy
- Rubber grips are wobbly
SUMMARY:
Before anything else…
This is one expensive product. It’s not just the most expensive on the list but of all the shovels we’ve tried. You need your wallets or cards prepared for this one.
But there’s a good reason for the price!
At first glance, this shovel will tempt you to buy it.
But of course, we don’t judge by looks. So we brought it camping. We also tried it on our backpacking trip. And we realized that we were right about this shovel.
It’s sturdy, durable, made of high-quality materials, and all the other expectations we had. And inside the box, you’ll find a bottle opener, a magnesium rod, survival whistle, rope, wire saw, two extension tubes, five handle sections, camera support, and a backpack.
We specifically loved that it’s a backpack, not a pouch.
The only issue…
Is that it’s a bit heavy. Not the heaviest we’ve seen, but still. And some parts aren’t as durable as the rest. Particularly, the bag and the small extra pieces.
But besides those, we have no other complaints.
It’s also a bonus that the handles have non-slip rubber grips. They’re a bit wobbly at times but they helped with the comfort and security of the handle.
In other words, kudos to Zune Lotoo!
Why Trust Us
We’re a group of outdoor enthusiasts, not shovel experts. We go on our outdoor trips for fun, for de-stressing, in celebration of something, and all the other reasons.

Completing and perfecting our bug-out gear is a staple in our agenda.
Every part of our survival gear has a specific function. We don’t carry unnecessary items in our bug-out bag that would just be deadweight. So we make sure that every item deserves its space.
In other words…
We don’t carry around a survival shovel just for fun. We think it’s a necessary survival tool that can help us have a fun and safe outdoor adventure. Meaning, we take this seriously.
We put effort into testing and scoring the shovels we bought. We also considered other survival shovel reviews so there’d be more perspective too.
Hopefully, we achieved our goal with this article, which is to help our fellow adventurers!
Buyer Guide: How To Choose The Best Bushcraft/Survival Shovel
1. What are the different types of survival shovels?
There isn’t a specific classification for this particular tool. But shovels differ in functionality. They can be:
- Bushcraft shovel – designed for digging, entrenching, ground leveling, scooping, and chopping or sawing wood.
- Camping shovels – almost the same as bushcraft, but usually less compact in construction.
- Survival shovel – along with all the bushcraft functions, they also have self-defense and emergency tools.
- Tactical shovel – doubles as a defensive weapon.
2. Features to look out for:
- Extra features like a bottle opener, emergency whistle, and others are less important than a tactical knife, fire bar, and other defensive and emergency tools.
- A durable handle is what makes the shovel convenient to use more than the durability and sharpness of the blade.
- A durable sheath or pouch secures the shovel and its parts so you won’t hurt yourself while carrying it.
3. Bushcraft/Survival shovels and specifications explained:
A bushcraft or survival shovel is a shovel designed to perform survival and camping tasks aside from shoveling and digging. Most survival shovels have collapsible parts where extra features and other tools are hidden.
Different brands differ in the following:
- Material – the most commonly used are high carbon steel and stainless steel for the head, and fiberglass-reinforced nylon and hardwood for the handle. High carbon is more durable but stainless steel is rust-resistant.
- Size – this will you how portable and convenient it is to carry the shovel
- Weight – this is another factor of portability and convenience
- Foldability – some campers prefer foldable ones because they’re more compact and have longer assembled handle lengths while others want the small but lighter ones.
4. These are things to consider:
- Don’t expect too much from an “all-in-one” product. Different functions require different specs.
- Tactical shovels are usually lighter and smaller so you can use them for self-defense. On the other hand, a gardening shovel has to be bigger so it can carry substantial amounts of dirt.
5. Bushcraft or survival shovel Top Tips:
- You should mind the handle length. It will make a huge difference in convenience and ease of use for you.
- The best survival shovels don’t have to have it all. As long as it’s durable and functional, you’re good to go.

Since you can’t judge a shovel by its price, we put this metric in. High value for money scores means that we were more than satisfied with the product, considering how much we paid for it.
But it’s not all about affordability. If it’s cheap, it has to be able to compete or exceed the expensive ones. And if it costs much but is just the same as the cheap ones, then take a few points off.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.
