SUMMARY:
If you want to strike down larger trees with less effort, bushcraft axes with long handles are the way to go.
The Husqvarna Wooden Multi-Purpose Axe is definitely up to the task with its 26-inch long handle and sharp blade with a curved cutting edge.
The long hickory handle of this axe provides better swing and leverage, and the grain alignment is as good as anyone could ask for its price point. The handle itself is quite thick, which is good for reducing hand fatigue when chopping wood, and has nice ergonomic details.
The hand-forged Swedish Steel axe head is well-crafted, sturdy, and has a decent weight, so you can easily choke all the way up the handle if you want more precision and control, like when you’re doing some fine carving.
Just a heads up!
The cutting blade is extremely sharp right out of the box, so you want to take extra care when taking it out.
Although this is not the cheapest option on this list, the price is still very reasonable for the quality you’re getting.

- Blade Material: 1045 High Carbon Steel
- Blade Length: 3.66 inches
Bottom Line: The Condor Tool & Knife Greenland Pattern Axe is a great reliable bushcraft axe with a quality that’s on par with high-end Swedish axes for much less price.
Pros
- Made from premium-quality materials
- It can be used for both soft and hard wood
- Has a lanyard hole
- Includes a high-quality leather sheath
Cons
- Needs sharpening out of the package
- The handle might be too thick for people with small hands
SUMMARY:
Want an axe made from superior materials, like a Gransfors Bruks, for half the price? The Condor Tool & Knife Greenland Pattern Axe is exactly what you’re looking for.
Constructed from high-grade materials, this axe is built for heavy-duty use.
The high carbon steel head is firmly connected to the American Hickory Wood handle by a round metal wedge with a wooden wedge. It’s very secure, so you can be confident that the axe head won’t separate from the handle even with intense chopping or splitting.
You’ll also love how this bushcraft axe can work on both soft and hard wood. We’ve brought it on many camping trips and it can do pretty much anything from making wood shavings, felling trees, splitting firewood, to cutting down small trees.
The included leather sheath is notable for its high quality as well, absolutely one of the best sheaths we’ve come across; it’s surprisingly well-made and sturdy with a nice snap. Another added feature is a hole at the end of the handle in which you can put a lanyard for easier carrying.
But here’s the kicker…
Some minor work is needed to maximize this axe’s potential, like giving the blade a little bit of sharpening once you receive it. However, considering that the quality is right up there with a Gransfors Bruks or any Swedish axe, but for less, we’d say it’s more than worth the effort.

Pros
- Impressively durable
- Rugged hand-forged axe head
- Nicely shaped handle
- Excellent grain orientation
- Good attention to detail
- Budget-friendly
Cons
- The handle is quite thin in the middle
- No sheath
SUMMARY:
In the market for a dependable camping axe that’s incredibly durable and doesn’t cost much? The Marbles MR701SB Camp Axe is a smart option.
You’ll love this axe’s handle if you prefer your handle unvarnished upon purchase. Made from tough American Hickory wood, it’s sturdy and strong with excellent grain orientation. The shape is pretty good too, there’s a nice swell at the end that makes it so comfortable to hold, even for small-handed people.
The blade is not too shabby either. It might not be super sharp right away, but it’s still very much usable for things like splitting kindling, aided by its convex grind. Also, there’s nothing a little bit of sharpening can’t fix. It’s very easy to sharpen as well, and after that, you got yourself a little beast of an axe.
The rounded edge of the blade makes it ideal for felling hardwoods, but it also works very well on softwoods like pine, and it’s a delight to use in both.
In addition to that…
The price is worth mentioning too. For the price point, you’re getting a highly durable, well-crafted axe with an El Salvador hand-forged sharp axe head, a strong wooden handle, and a great balance. Hard to beat that.
To sum it up…
The Marbles MR701SB Camp Axe is a wonderful little axe, especially considering the price to quality ratio. It’s been our go-to camping small axe since we got our hands on it.

In our experience of using this axe, we’d say it’s ideal for wood carving, chopping some ¾- to 2.5-inch branches, and to split firewood.
The black glass fiber-filled PA handle is extremely ergonomic with a black TPR rubber grip and finger placements that ensure really good grip and maximum comfort during usage. The rubber also helps soften impact and prevents the axe from slipping from your hands.
The axe head is made from 3Cr13 Titanium Coated Stainless Steel, and the pommel has a lanyard hole as well as a nice hammer surface, making it good for pounding tent stakes or other hammering tasks. Right out of the package, it’s already pretty sharp, but if you want to make it completely razor-sharp, you can with a little bit of sharpening.

This axe is beautiful, alright, but how useful is it?
Well, we’ve taken it on several camping and hiking trips, and it was able to chop small- to medium-sized trees and branches, split logs, and make kindling with no problem at all. Thanks to its head’s unique beard head design, this axe is also easy to use for wood carving, and we even used it as a bottle opener.
Admittedly…
It would’ve been nicer if it comes with a sheath, but for the terrific quality we’re getting with this beauty, we’re certainly not complaining.

Buyers Guide: How To Choose The Best Bushcraft Axes
1 - What are the different types of axes?
Bushcraft Hatchet
A Bushcraft Hatchet is basically just a smaller, handier, more portable, and more compact version of a bushcraft axe. It’s built for one-handed, light-duty tasks. Some of the hatchet’s common uses are cutting/felling saplings, chopping small branches, carving wood, shoveling snow, and processing game. A bushcraft hatchet is also great for hammering tent pegs because of the hammerhead on the opposite side of its blade.
Felling axes
As the name suggests, they are made for felling trees and splitting wood. They have characteristic long handles and flared thin blades.
Tactical Axe
Popular amongst survivalists and law enforcement officers, the tactical axe is also commonly referred to as tactical tomahawk. Lightweight and well-balanced, this modern invention excels at chopping, splitting, digging, hammering, and as a close-range weapon.
2 - Features to look out for
Balance
Great balance is important when using an axe. Without it, not only will the axe be extremely difficult to use, but it can also be dangerous.
Ergonomic handle
Chopping, splitting, cutting, trimming, hammering— all these bushcraft chores take quite a lot of time, so it’s best if the axe’s handle has nice ergonomic details to ensure optimum comfort and ease of handling.
Added features
It’s ideal if the axe comes with additional features such as a sheath or a sharpening puck.
3 - Top Tips
- Larger axes with longer handles aren’t always better. For some tasks, smaller axes or ones with shorter handles are actually best.
- Apply boiled linseed oil all over your axe’s handle to improve its grip and strengthen it. Make sure to apply at least one coat every year.
- ‘Invest in a high-quality sheath to secure your axe properly. Speaking of which…
- Don’t leave your axe unsheathed when not in use!
Frequently Asked Questions
Question 1: How do I choose a bushcraft axe?
A – There are many factors to consider when choosing a bushcraft axe. But there’s no need to be overwhelmed. First of all, ask yourself how you intend on using the axe. For heavy-duty usage, axes with longer handles are best as it delivers more power and force. However, if you’re a beginner or need more accuracy, smaller axes with short handles are your best bet. The shape of the blade is something to consider too. Different blade shapes have different cutting expertise. Some axes are also specifically designed for certain tasks. For example, splitting mauls are ideal for splitting logs, while felling axes are for felling trees. And of course, consider what will fit your budget too. While we believe that you don’t have to spend a lot to get an outstanding axe (case in point, our Best Value awardee), sometimes you’ll have to pay extra for some special features. It’s up to you to determine what features you’re willing to go without.
Question 2: What is the purpose of a bearded axe?
A - Also known as “Skeggøx,” bearded axes are mainly associated with Vikings. They’re more than just cool-looking axes, though. There are many purposes to this kind of axe, but the main ones are balance, precision, and accuracy, as the design makes it easier to choke up the handle or get your hand behind the blade’s cutting edge.
Question 3: What is the best quality axe?
A - While deciding which axe is the best is subjective, generally speaking, the best-quality axes are made from the highest quality materials, have superb build quality, sharp blades, and handles that feel great on the hands.
