Throwing axe

This axe is full-steel, from head to handle. That’s why it needs a grip. But the Estwing doesn’t have just any kind of grip. It’s leather, and that’s something that impressed us about this product.

Because of the material…

The durability of this axe is exceptional. I mean, we all know that steel is harder to break than wood.

But what we noticed was how the edge retained its sharpness even after many uses. We tried it on firewood, then kindling, then eventually we split logs with it. And it did great.

There’s just one thing.

It’s only 1.38 pounds in overall weight. It might be too light for some. 

It’s easier to throw, which is an advantage. But the head didn’t sink as deep on our tree trunk target as we hoped it would. The sharpness wasn’t the problem, so we figured it would be the light head.

It’s not going to pass the National Axe Throwing Federation or NATF with that weight. But if you’re opting for something to use in a game, this isn’t the one for you. The rules require your axe to have a wooden handle. And this one’s steel through and through.

But as for the other axe purposes…

This Estwing axe is very useful and effective. It chopped wood like no one’s business. And the leather grip added to the convenience of swinging this axe around.

Plus, even if you can’t use it in a competition, it’s good enough for practicing your throw.

The Iunio axe’s nylon sheath may be so-so, but the rest of the package is impressive. This compact survival design might be heavy, but that’s fine. If you have this on your back in the forest, you won’t need any other tool.

Why?

Because it’s not just a mere axe. If you disassemble the handle, you’ll find a firestarter with a whistle, a fish scaler, two extension bars, a safety hammer, and a hand rope. Oh, and also – a compass!

Now all you need is a jungle to survive in…

It’s not perfect.

Because the handle is easily taken apart, the overall durability lost a few points for us. You have to be careful swinging it around. We suggest that you double-check if all the screws are in place and the compartments are shut tight before you even lift the axe.

And since it’s steel and aluminum alloy all over, you can’t use it in a competition. For some, that can be a bummer.

But, so what?

It has a lot of other uses that a traditional axe doesn’t. And the blade itself is sturdy. It doesn’t quickly chip off or go blunt.

And the best thing about it is that it costs a lot less than the average camping axe. You can allot the extra dollars somewhere else!

One of the most important characteristics of these ten best throwing axes is the durability and sharpness of the axe head. This particular SOG tomahawk towered over the other in that category!

You might think…

We’re exaggerating. But, no. We were amazed by the performance of this axe in splitting firewood, cutting up branches, and even throwing. Plus, the spike at the opposite of the edge could pierce a target thoroughly.

And we didn’t hone the edge until after all of us had tried it. That’s a huge point for this tomahawk.

However…

When these well-balanced throwing axes come around, pro axe throwers would want to try them out in competitions. But this axe doesn’t meet the NATF standards.

So we just settled on it being one of our practice throwing axes.

Anyway…

It’s a lightweight axe, which is good for beginners. And you won’t get tired easily even after several swings.

Competitive hatchet throwing is more difficult than it looks. Since the NATF and other league and association standards require blades with nothing protruding at the butt, balance is tricky.

What we’re saying here is…

Not only did this Cold Steel hatchet meet the requirements – dimensions, head weight, etc. – but it’s perfectly balanced too. 

Beginners or professionals alike would be impressed by this axe.

Only…

There’s the issue of the handle. It’s not very sturdy as we hoped it would be.

It’s wood, as per the NATF conditions, so it will not be as durable as steel. But it’s hickory, and it should’ve been more durable than this.

Still, it’s recommendable.

We didn’t mind the handle because, unlike the reviews we’ve read, ours didn’t send the head flying around even after several throws. It was still intact after our game was over.

As for all the chopping, splitting, and other camping chores – we had no problem with it. It performed well, and the edge retention was great too.

This tomahawk doesn’t meet the official game standards, just like most of the best throwing axes we’ve found. Also, it’s slightly imbalanced. That’s something that we, throwers, take seriously.

But don’t judge so quickly.

There’s a lot to love about this Estwing product.

One of them is its durability, which surprised us. It’s synthetic, which is less sturdy than single-forged steel construction. But it chopped tree branches – even the thick ones – just as well.

Plus, we didn’t have to hone the edge now and then.

In other words…

This is some heavy-duty tomahawk that you’d love to add to your collection. 

You can practice your throwing skills with it too. And the leather grip makes it more usable and convenient.

If you’ve ever watched Viking movies and loved them, you’re going to fall for this axe too! It looks just like those ancient throwing axes that people carried as they rode their dragons – in the movies, that is.

And the fact that it has a completely hand-forged head adds to its authenticity.

But that’s not all.

These expertly balanced throwing hawks will pass NATF, WATL, and even the IATF requirements. So this is good enough as a competition throwing axe.

The hickory wood handle didn’t disappoint us either. Sometimes, the head would fall off, but it was easy to secure back in. There are instructions in the packaging anyway.

It’s just the right weight and sharpness for any throwing technique.

Then again…

The best throwing axes, at least for us, should be versatile. 

The bluntness of this blade proves to be less useful in the field than in a game. It sure looks like a muscle man’s tool, but we had to hone it after a few swings at a log.

Still…

It’s effective enough. Plus, it will complete your Viking armor!

By the looks and the price of this SOG tomahawk pack, we expected more. We didn’t get less from it, but we hoped it would be better than the cheaper ones.

Sadly, this tactical tomahawk is less durable than the other throwing axes. Add to that the polymer handle, which doesn’t go well with stainless steel at all.

But don’t jump to conclusions.

It’s still a very useful axe – with its sharp edge and spike. In fact, we recommend this for your next camping trip.

It’s lightweight, compact, and very handy. Plus, its nylon sheath deserves a special mention. The camping axe sheath is one of the most well-made we’ve seen and tried.

This SOG hawk may not be the best for throwing games, but experienced throwers would still take this for practice.

Even at first glance, we could tell that this can be a competition throwing axe. The handle is a little bit longer than the requirement, but you can chop a few inches off, so it’s within standards.

You just can’t pass up the beauty of this hawk’s balance and lightweight throw. It’s beginner-friendly, and it’s perfect for any throwing style.

Plus…

The materials it’s made of – especially the wooden handle – are quite impressive.

We’ve expected as much, given the price that we paid for it. It’s a little too expensive for our taste, but it’s not disappointing.

Its overall durability also makes it useful for other activities and chores. But you might want to hone the edge now and then.

This product just took comfort and convenience to the next level.

Yes, it’s a bit heavy.

And no, you can’t use it in a competition – except maybe for the big axe throws. Aside from the fact that it’s not a single-bit axe, this one weighs like gravity.

But of the throwing axes that we’ve tried, it’s one of the most comfortable to swing and throw. Thanks to its patented shock reduction grip. It did wonders to our chores.

Like we said…

It weighs a pound more than the norm. But we didn’t tire as quickly as expected in using it. 

Plus, the blade’s edges – both of them – are sharp and durable. Thanks to its forged steel construction, the logs we chopped didn’t even suffer.

We all agreed that this could pass for a professional throwing hatchet. The specs can be admitted to the competitive leagues, and their balance is impressive.

This hatchet is great for throwing, for pros and beginners alike.

However…

We just have a few complaints about the durability and sturdiness of its handle and head. If an inexperienced thrower accidentally breaks the handle, it might be easy to replace it. But that’s an added cost.

But besides that…

We’re pretty impressed.
